Facebook announces Mobile Games Publishing pilot program

Facebook announces Mobile Games Publishing pilot program

Facebook has reportedly been toying around with the idea of launching a distribution platform for mobile games, boosting advertising revenue by also taking a cut of sales. As of today, the initiative is official: a new Mobile Games Publishing page is now live on Facebook's developers site. The pilot program is designed for small and medium-sized gaming developers -- after signing up, Facebook will help developers target consumers who might be interested in playing. Additionally, the site will provide feedback through analytics tools, enabling developers to refine their approach in response to customer interest. The program isn't open to everyone just yet, but if you're a small to mid-sized dev that Facebook identifies as "high-potential," you might just have a shot at joining up. Nexus 7 (2012) getting performance boost with Android 4.3 update

Nexus 7 (2012) getting performance boost with Android 4.3 update

The new Nexus 7 is the hot tablet in the Android world right now and while there are some decent improvements in terms of the specs, that doesn?t mean your older model Nexus 7 will instantly turn into trash. Then again, some of those older model Nexus 7 tablets have been suffering from serious lag issues in recent months.

3T8A95251-540x360111111

If you happen to have a 2012 model Nexus 7 that is sluggish ? the Android 4.3 update should bring some improvement. It seems the issue of sluggishness with the Nexus 7 is due to a feature called TRIM. This is described as being something that basically acts as a garbage collector picking up the trash.

The folks at AnandTech mention how TRIM will run when your tablet is idle with the screen off and sitting with a battery life of 70 percent or greater. The issue with the previous model Nexus 7 is that while TRIM support has been around since Android 4.2 ? it wasn?t enabled. And regardless of how good a feature can be, if it is turned off then it will not do anything.

Anyway, looking forward you will likely want to grab that Android 4.3 update because it has enabled fstrim. The one important factor to remember ? this is not an instant fix. In other words, you are not going to have a magically faster Nexus 7 immediately after your tablet first boots into Android 4.3.

Instead you should update, make sure you have a good battery life and let your tablet sit so this can work some magic. That all being said, while it is nice to see Google has addressed this issue with the 4.3 update, this was something that could have been taken care of in the past. There are some ?fstrim? related apps in Google Play, however those were limited to those who had rooted their tablet.

Ammonia leak stopped at Union Gap warehouse

UNION GAP, Wash. ? A mechanical failure in a compression room caused an ammonia leak this morning at the Eakin fruit warehouse on Main Street, but the situation is now under control, according to Union Gap fire officials.

One employee who arrived at the building just before 6 a.m. smelled the ammonia and was taken to a local hospital for observation, but Union Gap fire officials say she was not injured. No other employees were in the building.

Main Street between the U.S. Highway 97 entrance ramp and Washington Street was shut down after fire crews arrived but re-opened at 8:10, fire officials said.

Union Gap fire was assisted by the hazardous materials specialists from the Yakima Fire Department.

Eakin Fruit is located at 4310 Main St.

Ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration to cool fruit warehouses.

Blood Cancer Lymphoma More Common Near Factories

The blood cancer non-Hodgkin lymphoma may be linked with exposure to benzene from the environment, a new study finds.

The researchers found that among people living in Georgia, the incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) was greater than expected among people living in regions near petroleum refineries and manufacturing plants, including in the metropolitan Atlanta area, and in the area surrounding one site in Savannah. With increasing distance from the benzene-releasing sites, the risk of the cancer dropped ? for every mile there was a 0.31 percent decrease in the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"This means that even moderate changes in distance can substantial change the incidence rate reduction," said study researcher Dr. Christopher Flowers, professor of Pediatrics and Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University in Atlanta.

Metropolitan Atlanta, Augusta, and Savannah had the highest rates in the state of several types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Most low-risk regions were located in the southern part of the state, according to the study published today (July 28) in the journal Cancer.

Although the study suggests a link between a population's benzene exposure and its rate of lymphoma, the findings may not hold true at the individual level, the researchers said. The presence of benzene in the environment is not enough to know how much any one person is exposed to, or to calculate risks on an individual level.

"Currently, there is insufficient data to determine whether individuals living in any specific location are at increased risk and should be concerned," Flowers said. [10 Do's and Don'ts to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer ]

"Our findings are limited without similar studies to corroborate our results, but we hope that our research will inform readers of the potential risks of living near facilities that release carcinogens into the air, groundwater or soil," said study author Catherine Bulka, researcher at Emory University.

Benzene, classified as a hazardous, cancer-causing chemical by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a colorless liquid that quickly evaporates when exposed to air. It exists in products derived from coal and petroleum, and is used in making products such as plastics, detergents and pesticides. People are exposed to benzene mainly by inhaling contaminated air.

While exposure to benzene is a widely recognized cause of leukemia?(a type of blood cancer affecting bone marrow), its association with lymphoma is less clear. Lymphomas are a group of blood cancers that affect white blood cells. The rate of lymphoma has increased by 4 percent each year since 1970, the researchers said.

About 70,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013, and about 19,000 will die of the disease this year, according to the National Cancer Institute. About 70 percent of people diagnosed with the condition survive at least five years.

Although the increase in lymphomas cases has been in part driven by better diagnosis techniques and the epidemic of HIV, which increases risk of the cancer, these factors account for just half of the additional cases of lymphomas. This suggests that expanded industrial production and exposure to chemicals in the environment may be risk factors for lymphomas, the researchers said.

"There is fair amount of data now indicating benzene does cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but it's still not universally accepted.? said Dr. Richard B. Hayes, professor of epidemiology and environmental medicine at New York University, who was not involved in the study. ?The evidence is growing, suggesting that benzene is associated with increased risk of lymphoma just as it is with leukemia.?

Hayes and his colleagues previously examined the link between benzene exposure and blood cancers. They followed 75,000 industrial workers between 1972 and 1987 in China, and found that benzene-exposed workers, who were employed in occupations such as painting, printing and footwearmanufacturing, were four times more likely to die from lymphoma than workers who were not exposed to benzene.

Currently federal regulations by Occupational Safety and Health Administration require benzene concentrations to be lower than 1 part per million parts of air in workplaces, during an eight-hour workday. But OSHA, along with other organizations, recommends levels be kept even lower, between two and ten times lower, because research shows levels that are currently legal can still be dangerous.

?There's been successful attempts to regulate benzene exposure in the workplace, which has improved the environmental situation as well,? Hayes said. ?But the fact that there are many people living in these areas close to releases, is something that needs to be further followed up.?

In the new study, the researchers used the population statistics of regions in Georgia, and the data gathered by the EPA on benzene releasing sites between 1988 and 1998.

They then investigated whether NHL incidence 10 years later, between 1999 and 2008, was higher in areas closer to benzene releasing sites where residents might have been exposed to benzene in the air or water for a long time. The data were adjusted for other factors such as population size, age and race.

When looking at rates of NHL across several subtypes of the disease, the researchers found that metropolitan Atlanta area was consistently identified as a hot spot, with more cases of each NHL subtype, whereas the smaller urban areas Augusta and Savanna had increased rates of only certain subtypes.

People living in urban areas are also exposed to other sources of benzene?such as car exhaust and cigarette smoke, which may explain why urban areas had higher NHL incidence, the researchers said.

The researchers did not include in the study the levels of benzene concentrations in areas surrounding the sites, because it is disputed whether the amount of emissions reported by factories is accurate.

President Obama And Hillary Clinton To Have Lunch Monday

By Alan with comments July 28, 2013 22:11

It will be in the president?s private dining room and closed to the press.

In the weeks following her departure from the State Department, Obama hosted Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, at a private dinner at the White House.

As she weighs another campaign, Clinton has been traveling the country giving dozens of speeches, both paid and pro-bono, and is working on a new book.

NBC to air Hillary Clinton miniseries

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? A Hillary Rodham Clinton miniseries timed to precede the 2016 presidential election is part of NBC's effort to create "event" programming that will draw viewers to the shrinking world of broadcast network TV, NBC's programming chief said Saturday.

"We need to be in the event business. I think you're going to hear that from every broadcast network," said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman.

The four-hour miniseries "Hillary," starring Diane Lane as the former first lady and secretary of state, is one such bid for distinctive programming, he said.

The goal is to woo viewers who are increasingly drawn away by cable TV's eye-catching, critically acclaimed fare like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" and other media choices.

Broadcasting's audience is shrinking by 4 percent to 7 percent annually, Greenblatt told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

"Anything that can shake up the landscape and say, 'we have something special'" would be considered part of the varied group of event projects, he said.

At NBC, that ranges from the new fall game show "Million Second Quiz" to big-ticket scripted fare including "Hillary" and other projects announced Saturday: "Rosemary's Baby" a four-hour version of the Ira Levin novel that was adapted as a 1968 movie; an adaptation of "Stephen King's Tommyknockers," and "Plymouth," about the Pilgrim's journey and settlement in America.

A six-hour miniseries about Cleopatra is in development, Greenblatt said.

Although Clinton hasn't announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for president, Greenblatt spoke as if her candidacy is expected. "Hillary" could air before Clinton announces her decision, but the timing has yet to be determined, Greenblatt said.

He didn't address how such a miniseries, which will track Clinton's life and career from 1998 to the present, might affect the presidential contest.

The part of former President Bill Clinton has yet to be cast. Lane's credits include the feature films "Unfaithful" and "Under the Tuscan Sun" and the TV movie "Cinema Verite."

Other networks seeking to stem audience erosion are jumping on the event bandwagon, especially in light of the success of another King adaptation, CBS' summer series "Under the Dome." Announced plans include a Fox's remake of the "Shogun" miniseries based on James Clavell's novel.

Greenblatt argued that NBC, which finished the last September-to-May season in fourth place in total viewers, is in better shape when the entire year is taken into account, especially among advertiser-favored young adult viewers.

He credited the popular talent contests "The Voice" and "America's Got Talent," as well as dramas "Grimm" and "Hannibal."

NBC has high hopes for the fall sitcom that brings Michael J. Fox back to TV but is prepared for a big tune-in for the debut episode that might not be sustainable, Greenblatt said.

NFL camp: Oakland Raiders' top pick D.J. Hayden practices

NAPA -- The jersey color needs some work, but Raiders cornerback D.J. Hayden was happy simply to be on the field with his teammates Friday.

"If I've got to have a red jersey on, that's what it is," Hayden said after the Raiders' first practice of training camp. "I'm cool with it."

Red jerseys are worn by quarterbacks and kickers as a symbol of being off-limits in terms of contact. Coach Dennis Allen said he wasn't sure how long the Raiders' first-round draft pick would be in red.

It was a minor surprise Hayden was on the field at all, considering he was placed on the non-football injury list Thursday after signing a contract reported at four years with a $5.88 million signing bonus.

Hayden was cleared by the medical staff Friday morning, but the Raiders will take their time with a player who underwent major surgery in November for a ruptured blood vessel leading to his heart and then had a related abdominal procedure to remove scar tissue in late May.

"It's been nine, 10 months since he's actually really played football," Allen said. "We're not just going to throw him in to the fire right away."

Hayden shrugged off the May abdominal surgery, saying, "It was hurting and was something I needed to get taken care of. Stuff happens all the time. I just had to deal with it, and I'm here now."

Hayden's work in limited reps was mostly with the second team, with Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins working with the first team.

As the No. 12 pick in the draft, and a player general manager Reggie McKenzie said he would have taken at No. 3 had the Raiders not traded down, the reasonable expectation would be for Hayden to be an immediate starter.

The recovery from two surgeries could change that, and the former University of Houston star said he'll do whatever is asked of him.

"Whatever the coaches decide is best for the team, then I'm cool with it," Hayden said. "I just want to go out there and just be me."

  • Matt Flynn was easily the sharpest of the quarterbacks on Day 1.

With Flynn working with the first team, Terrelle Pryor with the second and rookie Tyler Wilson with the third team, the three quarterbacks got an equal amount of snaps.

"I think Matt made some nice reads and made some really nice throws," Allen said.

Pryor was hit and miss, while Wilson had one horrendous sequence with three interceptions in four throws.

  • Allen praised the Raiders' run execution following the first practice, and Darren McFadden was delighted to be back in a gap-power scheme.

"It feels great. I feel like I'm a downhill runner, and that's something the coaches see also," McFadden said.

  • Free safety Charles Woodson, having played on some poor defenses with the Raiders and at a championship level in Green Bay, likes what he sees of his scheme and supporting cast.

"When I look at the way we move around, I think we're going to be a fast-flowing defense," Woodson said. "I think that if you can have that on any team -- a team that's willing to sell out every play and get to the ball -- you're going to be in ballgames."

  • Linebacker Miles Burris (knee) and defensive tackle Pat Sims (undisclosed) began camp on the active Physically Unable to Perform list. They count toward the 90-man limit and can be activated once they pass a physical. Tackle Menelik Watson is on the non-football related injury list with an undisclosed injury and is not practicing.

Allen had no timetable for their return.

  • The team signed five-time Pro Bowler Andre Gurode, who has played guard and center. He worked out in front of Raiders coaches and scouts after practice. Gurode, 34, played center with the Dallas Cowboys and converted to guard with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Raiders opened camp with Lucas Nix as the starting left guard, with Tony Bergstrom running with the second team. Mike Brisiel is currently the starter on the right side.

  • For the first time in memory, specialists participated in drills with a tackling dummy. Even Sebastian Janikowski delivered a lumbering blow. Asked about Janikowski's form, Allen said, "I'd rather see him kick it."

    Blue Jasmine

Jasmine (born Jeannette) French, the exquisitely dressed chasm of need at the center of Woody Allen?s misanthropic comedy Blue Jasmine, may be among the most unpleasant of all Allen protagonists (and if you have any memory of Kenneth Branagh as a scuzzy celebrity journalist in Celebrity, or Allen himself as a solipsistic author in Deconstructing Harry, you know she has some robust competition). As played by Cate Blanchett in a theatrical, screen-engulfing performance that leaves the audience feeling alternately dazzled and asphyxiated, Jasmine is the neurotic Woody Allen WASP diva to rule them all. Washing down her Xanaxes with a vodka martini (or in a pinch?and Jasmine gets into a lot of pinches?a straight shot of vodka) as she narrates her constant, anxious inner monologue to whoever will listen, Jasmine attains the paradoxical state of being fascinatingly tiresome.

The same pair of words might be used to describe Blue Jasmine, which, whether you like it or not, surely counts as one of Allen?s more unexpected films of the past decade. After a string of wistful ensemble comedies set in romantic European capitals (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris, To Rome with Love), he?s made an existentially bleak single-character study that bounces back and forth between a New York not usually inhabited by Allen characters?the posh Park Avenue/Hamptons circuit of the Wall Street superrich?and a curiously denatured San Francisco that doesn?t seem like a place ever inhabited by anyone.

As the film begins, Jasmine, whose husband Hal (Alec Baldwin) has been imprisoned for Madoff-style financial crookery, is flying across the country (first-class, despite her pleas of being dead broke) to stay with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Ginger, a divorced mother of two who works bagging groceries, lives in a different world from her sister?s and has barely seen Jasmine since she married into the high life. Ginger?s also nursing an old grudge; years before, she and her then-husband (a surprisingly touching Andrew Dice Clay) were among the patsies who lost their life savings by entrusting them to the conniving Hal.

Over the next few months, Jasmine settles into an uneasy existence at her sister?s place, eventually taking a job she had at first dismissed as insultingly remedial: working the front desk for a lecherous dentist (the great Michael Stuhlbarg, wasted in a flimsy part). Jasmine and Ginger fight a lot, often about Ginger?s boyfriend Chili (Bobby Cannavale), a working-class Stanley Kowalski type who (understandably) resents Jasmine?s condescension and snobbery. Convinced that her impeccable taste qualifies her for a career as an interior designer, Jasmine resolves to take a computer course that?from the bits of it we see?seems to be a simple here?s-how-to-get-online adult education class, yet which also somehow involves hours of furrowed-brow nightly study. No one in the movie appears to find this strange or offers to save Jasmine the trouble by tutoring her in basic browser usage. (This computer-class subplot is a small part of the film, but Allen?s tone-deafness as to the role of technology in modern life is worth noting?no wonder the version of 2013 San Francisco he shows us feels so fuzzily unspecific.)

This mismatched pair of sisters?one short, brunette, earthy, and reasonably happy, the other tall, blond, ethereal, and miserable?soon find themselves in romantic hot water. Ginger pursues a flirtation with a gentle sound engineer (Louis C.K. in a tiny role), infuriating her hot-tempered boyfriend. And Jasmine, upon meeting a cultured, wealthy diplomat (Peter Sarsgaard), proceeds to invent a new past for herself out of whole cloth, one that doesn?t contain a crooked husband or a now-estranged stepson.

The choices Jasmine makes are so consistently reckless and self-sabotaging?and Blanchett?s performance so tremulously risky?that it?s impossible not to get a little caught up in the sickening momentum of her free-fall through the class system, as Allen cuts between her high-living past (charity fundraisers, polo ponies, cocktail-party debates about the value of owning a jet) and her modest living conditions in the present day. But Allen misses chance after chance to make this into something more than a vaguely topical reboot of A Streetcar Named Desire (to whose general storyline it hews fairly closely). The male characters in particular come off as too schematic: Almost without exception, they are either predatory rascals or clueless schlubs, mere foils for the squabbling, suffering sisters. As for Ginger and Jasmine, we spend an inordinate amount of screen time in their company without ever learning much about the complexities of either their past or present relationship. They were both adopted, we?re told at one point?but why does Ginger insist her sister was always their mother?s favorite? What was it about their upbringing that caused them to grow up into two such different people? (Judging from the unsympathetic portrait he draws of Ginger?s two hefty, obnoxious sons, Allen seems to hold childhood in about the same esteem as the sourly unmaternal Jasmine.)

Jasmine?s various pathological behavior patterns are on ample display?in scene after scene, we watch in squirming half-sympathy as she traps herself with self-aggrandizing lies. But though Blanchett excels at making us feel horrified pity for her character?especially in the last quarter of the film, as it becomes clear Jasmine?s spiritual redemption is probably not around the corner?her performance never sheds a certain stunt-like, calculated quality. Blanchett?s lavish, almost operatic turn as Jasmine sloshes against the sides of this insubstantial movie like liquid in a too-small container (maybe the room-temperature Stoli Jasmine is continually downing). There are many moments in which, as a viewer, you notice and admire Blanchett?s gestures and inflections, but very few in which you understand her deluded character?s motivations from the inside. She disintegrates beautifully before our eyes, not for any specific set of reasons the film maps, but because that?s what tragic heroines like Blanche DuBois (whom Blanchett played onstage in 2009, to general acclaim) are there to do.

As the movie?s last scene approaches?one of the darkest endings to a Woody Allen film I can remember, and one which gives the lie to this movie?s classification as a comedy?Jasmine has come unmoored from the relationships and belief systems that kept her tethered to reality: She?s become the kind of lady who walks around mumbling in a chic Chanel jacket, her mordant invective comprehensible only to herself. I doubt the director meant for Jasmine to be his stand-in at that moment, but I couldn?t help seeing the resemblance.

George Alexander Louis joins a long line of royal names

George Alexander Louis's name has a long history of royal usage. For example, there have been six King Georges to rule Britain.

For months, bookmakers in Britain, where gambling is legal, have been taking bets on the details of the royal progeny, including sex and date of birth. The boy?s name was the last element to be revealed.

All three of the baby's names were among those favored by betting services. Paddy Power, a popular bookmaker, put the odds of the royal baby being named George at 7 to 4 ? higher than any other name. Alexander and Louis were also among the top contenders, with odds of 9 to 1 and 12 to 1, respectively.

According to a statement released by Kensington Palace earlier today, the boy ? who is now third in line to inherit the British throne ? will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.?

Prince George was born Monday, July 22, at St. Mary?s Hospital in Paddington, west London. The world caught its first glimpse of him the day after, when his parents Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, took him home to Kensington Palace.

The announcement of the name came relatively quickly, according to The New York Times. Normally, the naming of newborn royals takes several days, if not weeks. The royal couple chose the name themselves, said royal officials.

Only hours before the name was announced, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry, the baby?s great grandmother and uncle, visited Kensington Palace to meet the boy for the first time, reports the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Prince George?s great grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was not able to attend the visit, as he is recovering from surgery.

The name George has a long royal heritage, having been the name of 27 monarchs throughout world history, including six British kings. The last king of Britain to be called George was the baby?s great great grandfather, George VI, who ruled from 1936 until 1952.

The boy's other names, Alexander and Louis, also have royal heritage.

The name Alexander has been used by kings for thousands of years, beginning with the Hittites. The most famous was Alexander the Great, from Macedonia. Though Britain has never been ruled by an Alexander, there have been three King Alexanders to rule Scotland, all during medieval times.

Louis, though not a popular name for kings in Britain, has a long history of royal usage on the continent. France, Hungary, and Spain ? among many others ? have all had a ruler named Louis. Arguably the most famous was Louis XIV of France, also known as Louis the Great, who outlived three of his heirs. The new prince has a closer connection to the name than that though: His father Prince William's full name is William Arthur Philip Louis.

Tigers' Cabrera says hip feeling better

CHICAGO (AP) ? A relieved Miguel Cabera said he was feeling better after sitting out the Detroit Tigers' 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night because of an injured left hip.

He also said he did not go for an MRI and was not sure when he would return to the lineup. Manager Jim Leyland said that could happen that could happen within the next two days against Chicago, and he doesn't expect Cabrera to wind up on the disabled list.

"I doubt very much he'll play (Wednesday)," Leyland said. "I can assure you, he's not going to play both these games the next two days. ... Will he play one? I can't answer that. But if he played (Wednesday) night, he certainly wouldn't play the day game. I don't know if he'll player either of the two, to be honest with you."

The American League MVP and Triple Crown winner, Cabrera left Monday's 7-3 win over Chicago in the fifth inning. He was replaced at third base by Don Kelly with one out in the bottom half of the inning ? after scoring in the top half ? and walked off holding his left side.

The Tigers said then that he had a sore hip flexor muscle and would be evaluated on Tuesday.

Kelly was at third base and batting eighth on Tuesday night. Left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo had the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

Cabrera, who became baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years last season, had played in 97 of Detroit's 98 games this year. He was leading the majors with a .358 batting average and was second in RBIs with 96.

In other injury-related news, Leyland said second baseman Omar Infante, on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle, could soon begin a rehab assignment. Assuming no setbacks from Tuesday's workout, Leyland said Infante would leave for Class A West Michigan on Wednesday and could rejoin the Tigers this weekend.

"That's the scenario we're hoping for," Leyland said.

He also said left-hander Darin Downs, out with tendinitis in his pitching shoulder, is "probably close to going out and pitching. But I can't tell you when."

Who could have thought one wee royal baby could attract so many 'oohs' and 'aahs'

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge display their newborn to the world outside St. Mary's hospital in London, and take questions from the world media.NBC News' Brian Williams reports.

By Chris Hampson, Director of International News, NBC News

    LONDON ? It?s been a long wait.

Even longer than the nine months it usually takes to have a baby.

Longer still if you?ve been standing for the last two weeks ? with not much to say but a lot of airtime to fill ? outside the London hospital that?s become the center of the attention for the whole world, apparently.

Ever since Kate and William got together, we?ve all secretly been wondering when they?d get around to the important business of Doing Their Duty.

There may have been a little romance and a lot of love happening along the way, but let?s not kid ourselves about what?s going on here.

It is, of course, about the joy of starting a family.? But it?s also about making sure the monarchy keeps going. It?s about producing an heir to the throne.

    JOHN STILLWELL/AFP/Getty Images

Prince William the Duke of Cambridge holds his new-born baby boy in front of the world's media outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London on July 23, 2013.

It?s been a major concern throughout Great Britain?s rather bloody history.? Henry VIII ? he of the six wives ? was said to be consumed with the belief that it was his duty to produce a male heir to secure the future of the Tudor dynasty. It was third time lucky for the old philanderer, though even then it didn?t go to plan.

So with the very welcome arrival of Prince Whatsisname of Cambridge, the future of the House of Windsor seems secure. There?s granddad, dad and now junior all standing by (well, not baby, not yet) to become His Majesty the King ? the first time we?ve had so many in the dugout? for more than 100 years.

    Nice work Kate.

As expected, for the most part Britons are ridiculously happy about the baby?s arrival.? Some are joyous because they love all things royal; some because they believe in the monarchy; and some because they just love babies and happy stories in the midst of all the misery that besets us these days.?

Prince Charles and Princess Diana brought one day old Prince William home from St. Mary's hospital June 22, 1982. NBC's Tom Brokaw and Rick Davis report.

There are others here who don?t care, and they are having a lean time of things right now because there is simply nowhere they can go to get away from the story.? It?s everywhere ? on every TV channel, in every paper, on every news website.? There is no hiding place for the curmudgeons.

The world, it seems, is captivated by this little nipper?s arrival. Not least (and this makes me happy as it helps pay the rent) our audience in the United States.

An American colleague told me this morning that her girlfriends had set up an email ?baby chain,? ?with everyone on it in a high state of excitement.? And, she said somewhat puzzled, ?they are normally so sensible!?

Well sense is out the window for now. As I write this I, a self-proclaimed royal doubter, am glued to my TV monitors. All four of them, all showing different channels, all pointing at the same door ? the exit to the Lindo Wing of St. Mary?s hospital, through which His Royal Diaper-Wearing Highness will emerge at any moment.

I suspect hundreds of thousands ? nay, millions ? around the world are doing the same thing. Who?d have thought one wee baby could attract so much attention.? This young chap surely gets into the Guinness Book of Records for causing the most ?Oohs? and ?Aahs? ever simultaneously-uttered across so many continents.

    Vickie Flores / Zuma Press

From restaurant decorations to dancing in the streets, check out how the world is celebrating the U.K.'s new royal heir.

    Nice work, Prince Not-Yet-Named.

My excuse?? I recently acquired the noble status of grandfather to a rather lovely baby girl. Now every day, when not dealing with the murder and mayhem that characterize my job as director of international news for NBC, I find myself ?oohing? and ?aahing? at video of the precious child doing all sorts off mind-blowing and never-before-done things like rolling over on her side, and rolling back again.

And that first smile? Believe me, it?s priceless.

So, monarchists or not, the world has cause to celebrate the arrival of the young prince, and all young human-kind who add to the sum of our joys. It?s because of them that life goes on.

It?s not often we news journalists get the chance to spread a little sunshine in the world. So make the most of it. The rains will come soon enough.

LinkedIn As A Social Marketing Platform - Business Insider

    BI Intelligence

LinkedIn is a powerful marketing and sales platform, if you know how to use it.?The?social network for professionals?has attracted?225 million people from more than 200 countries, and its users are increasingly engaged

LinkedIn users viewed?63% more pages on the mobile and desktop versions of the site?in the first quarter of 2013 than during the same quarter in 2012.?As a hub for professionals to network, LinkedIn presents tremendous potential for business-to-business (B2B) sales and B2B marketing professionals.

In a new report?from?BI?Intelligence,?we analyze how Linkedin could aid in sales efforts and expand your list of leads, telling you what you need to know about InMail, looking at Sponsored InMail and a case study of its performance, and examine how you can use Linkedin as a marketing platform, breaking down the various ad products on the platform and the other techniques you can use as well.?

Here's a brief overview of Linkedin's most useful sales and marketing products:

    • InMail: InMail can be an extremely effective tool for salespeople, but it does require a paid subscription to one of LinkedIn's premium memberships for sales professionals.?InMails are response-guaranteed. In other words, you only pay for those that you receive replies to.?By limiting the number of InMails one can send in a given month, LinkedIn is in effect forcing salespeople to pitch to only their top targets. Thus they're mitigating the amount of irrelevant sales pitches that users receive, and keeping the user experience uncluttered and positive.
    • Sponsored InMail: Sponsored InMail?is a direct-message ad which you can use to target a far greater number of people on LinkedIn than you could with the InMails.?Sponsored InMails show up as messages in recipients' message queue, but they are different from run-of-the-mill InMails in that they weren't targeted to individual users but to larger groups according to specific audience-targeting criteria.?You can specify recipients by geography, job role, group membership, gender, company size, and other traits.?Meagan Eisenberg, a vice president at DocuSign, an e-signature transaction management company, outlined for BI Intelligence the success of?a Sponsored InMail campaign she ran, with the goal of?bringing new leads into the top of the funnel, and then once those leads were generated, build a pipeline to push them along toward the final conversion.
    • Ad products: The presence of ads on LinkedIn is less noticeable than comparable social networks, such as Facebook. Ads are more targeted, and appear to be a more natural part of the user experience. Even display ads tend to meld in more seamlessly with LinkedIn content since they are so often for professional services and white papers.?LinkedIn's?self-service ad platform?is where you can place an order for a campaign. There are a number of different ad types to choose from, including cost-per-click ads, sponsored page follow story ads, sponsored job listings, promoted company pages, and display ads. All of these ad products have targeting capabilities, pin-pointing LinkedIn members by job title, industry, company size, interests, and seniority.??

Water on Mars? Ancient Red Planet had humongous ocean, say scientists. (+video)

Water on Mars: Images from NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter suggests that billions of years ago, as much as a third of the Red Planet's surface could have been covered with liquid water.?

Scientists have spotted more evidence that an enormous ocean on Mars covered much of the planet's surface billions of years ago.

The latest clues were found in photos from NASA's powerful Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the planet. The images show what appears to be an ancient river delta, which may have emptied into a?vast Martian ocean?that inundated up to one-third of the Red Planet long ago, a new study reports.

"Scientists have long hypothesized that the northern lowlands of Mars are a dried-up ocean bottom, but no?one yet has found?the smoking gun," study co-author Mike Lamb, an assistant professor of geology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, said in a statement. [Photos: The Search for Water on Mars]

The new study does not provide the long-sought smoking gun, researchers stressed, but it further bolsters the hypothesis.

The team studied high-resolution images of a slice of the northern lowlands snapped by the HiRise camera aboard NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which can distinguish features as small as?10 inches?(25 centimeters)?on the Red Planet's surface.

Specifically, the scientists looked at a 39-square-mile?(100 square kilometers)?area that's part of a larger region called Aeolis Dorsa, which lies about?620 miles?[? greatest diameter of the dwarf planet, Ceres]?(1,000 km)?from Gale Crater. (NASA's?Curiosity rover?touched down inside Gale Crater last August, kicking off a planned two-year surface mission to assess Mars' past and present potential to host microbial life.)

The small section of Aeolis Dorsa features many ridges called inverted channels, which form in river bottoms over time when coarse material, such as gravel, is deposited by flowing water. Inverted channels can linger long after the rivers that created them have evaporated, helping researchers trace the past activity of liquid?water on Mars.

HiRise images allowed the study team to do just that in the section of Aeolis Dorsa they examined. They found that the inverted channels spread out markedly and slope steeply downward near their end, just as streams here on Earth do when they approach and empty into the sea.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In the first 200 years of the republic, just three presidents survived more than two decades after leaving office John Adams, Martin Van Buren and Herbert Hoover. The odds for ex-presidents have improved considerably since then.

Jimmy Carter, who raised the bar for active post-presidential years, is 88 now, and 32 years out of office. No one has survived longer after leaving the White House. George H.W. Bush, 89, passed the two-decade mark this year. The two most recent former presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both are going strong. Gerald Ford lived nearly 30 years after leaving office.

There's a lot happening in the ex-presidents club these days ? thanks to increasing longevity, the personalities of the current members and expanding opportunities for influence.

After a relatively quiet start to his post-presidency, George W. Bush in recent weeks has made headlines by speaking out for immigration reform and popping up in Africa at a wreath-laying with President Barack Obama to remember victims of terrorism. Clinton, with his philanthropic work and a wife who's a potential presidential candidate, is never far from the news.

The elder Bush, although frail, was at the White House last week (in jaunty red-and-white striped socks) for a ceremony promoting the volunteerism program he started as president. And Carter, noted for his years of globe-trotting work to advance human rights, spoke out last week against "legal bribery of candidates" at home in the form of unchecked political contributions by outside groups.

Is all this activity the new model for ex-presidents? It turns out they've got plenty of examples to draw on from earlier centuries.

"There's a whole class of people who leave the White House and continue to take a hyperactive role in American life," says presidential historian Douglas Brinkley of Rice University. He points to Andrew Johnson, who was elected to the Senate after a presidency that included impeachment; William Howard Taft, who became a Supreme Court justice; John Quincy Adams, who was an outspoken opponent of slavery as a member of the House; Theodore Roosevelt, who created the Bull Moose Party and tried to regain the presidency, and many more.

"There is no rule of thumb," says Brinkley. "Each man is just different."

For all their differences, though, recent chief executives have tended to start their post-presidential years relatively quietly, taking time to regroup, to heal in some cases, and give the new guy space to operate. They focus on raising money for their presidential libraries/centers. They write memoirs. Their poll numbers improve as time passes and memories of hard-fought presidential battles soften.

    Call that phase one.

Bush, whose presidential center in Dallas was dedicated in April and whose 2010 memoir, "Decision Points," was a best-seller, has seen his poll numbers rebound, and he seems to be entering phase two: He says he wants to make a difference in the world, but steer clear of politics and avoid meddling in Obama's business.

His recent activities have demonstrated both the possibilities and limitations of an ex-president's influence.

Bush's presence in Africa during Obama's visit to the continent offered a reminder of his efforts to fight HIV and AIDS there. But his entreaty to bring a "benevolent spirit" to the debate over immigration reform seemed to have zero impact on House Republicans. GOP legislators said Bush's comments never even came up in their closed-door meeting about immigration on the day he spoke out.

"We care what people back home say, not what some former president says," said Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan.

Still, recent ex-presidents seem to be assuming a higher profile in public affairs and politics, says Thomas F. Schaller, a political scientist at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County who has written a study of postmodern ex-presidents.

"The opportunities are greater," says Schaller, pointing to the bigger role of electronic media, the globalization of politics and the tendency of ex-presidents to work more cooperatively with one another and with the current occupant of the White House.

After Clinton and the elder Bush worked closely on humanitarian aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Indonesia, Clinton quipped, "People began to joke that I was getting so close to the Bush family, I had become the black sheep son."

A number of earlier ex-presidents also played on the global stage ? but with a smaller megaphone.

Herbert Hoover, who lived nearly 32 years after his presidency, traveled the world and took on significant relief efforts in Europe during and after World War II. He later served on government reform commissions during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, and declared he had "outlived the bastards" who blamed him for the Great Depression, according to Schaller.

Brinkley says Carter, who left office with disastrous job approval ratings, "game-changed" the ex-president's role with his vigorous public policy activity and freelance diplomacy.

The joke is that Carter, who left office in 1981, used the presidency as a stepping stone to his ex-presidency. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Clinton, with his foundation work, seems intent on following Carter's model, although the two have had prickly relations over the years, in part because of Carter's unbidden forays into diplomacy while Clinton was president and his criticism during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Obama will exit the White House at age 54, some 15 years younger than when Ronald Reagan took office. He'll soon need to consider how his next act will play out over what most likely will be decades.

"Who wants to think their better days are behind them when you're in your mid-50s?" asks Brinkley. "You try to say, 'How can I make a bigger impact?' You're seeing Clinton do that, and you'll see George W. Bush do it, but in his own Texas-style way."

At his library dedication, the younger Bush related that Alexander Hamilton had once worried about ex-presidents "wandering among the people like discontented ghosts."

"Actually," he added, "I think we seem pretty happy."
