Researchers believe that bacteria and inflammation that are present with periodontitis play a role in some systemic diseases. Diseases such as diabetes, blood cell disorders, and more, can lower the body?s resistance to infection, making periodontal diseases more severe. Studies link the chronic inflammation from periodontitis with the development of cardiovascular problems.? Evidence suggests that oral bacteria are linked directly to heart disease, artery blockage and stroke. People with diabetes often have periodontal disease. They are more likely to develop and have more severe periodontitis than non-diabetics.? Although periodontitis may contribute to these health conditions, it?s important to understand that just because two conditions occur at the same time doesn?t necessarily mean one causes the other.? We do know? that people with diabetes and people who smoke are at an increased risk for developing periodontal disease.? Protect your body, speak to your dentist about periodontal health.

homewatch caregivers
Talking to your loved one about what they want as they age can make you uneasy and them uncomfortable. From adult child, to caring friend or guardian ? you need to know the signs to recognize and suggestions on simplifying and clarifying the concerns at hand.
The only agenda should be honesty on all sides. You and other family members may be concerned about hurting feelings; your loved one may worry that by disclosing their needs they risk loosing their independence.
Change can occur slowly and subtly; and may not register with at first. What may present itself as illness could actually be results of loneliness. Learn the signs, and prepare yourself for an open sharing of concerns to insure you are preserving your loved ones dignity, protecting their independence, and providing peace of mind to them and yourself.

Take Two Aspirins and Say a Little Prayer!
by Sister Karen Zielinski, OSF
sisters of st. francis
I take care of my health:? I visit my doctors, take my pills and spend time in daily prayer. My daily prayer is just as vital for my health as any medical procedure.
We all know how to handle our high blood pressure or other health conditions, and praying for our health should be included right up there with all our healthy habits.? We need to include spirituality in our whole health care protocol. Many doctors believe in prayer?s healing power and see results in patients who weave spirituality into their whole healthcare routine.
It does not matter what faith we are. We can all be in relationship with our God or a higher power.? Some who might not practice a specific belief can meditate, share their concerns with friends and family and engage in spiritual activities that help them face and deal with health challenges.
Prayer is a dynamic, active part of taking care of our whole body.
Prayer is just what the doctor should order.
Reiki

Harmony in life
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by ?laying on hands? and is based on the idea that an unseen ?life force energy? flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one?s ?life force energy? is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words ? Rei which means ?God?s Wisdom or the Higher Power? and Ki which is ?life force energy.? So Reiki is actually ?spiritually guided life force energy.?
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
