PST: New US women's soccer coach is an Aussie

After an Australian Women?s National Team match against the United States in September, NBC Sports? Kyle Martino asked head coach Tom Sermanni about his interest in the U.S. Women?s job. The 58-year-old Scot, who has coached Australia since leaving the U.S. club scene in 2003, called Pia Sundhage?s former position the best coaching job in the world.

On Tuesday, Sermanni was named to that position, becoming the seventh head coach in U.S. Women?s National Team history. He start his new job on Jan. 1.

In an announcement posted to U.S. Soccer?s website, federation president Sunil Gulati trumpeted Sermanni?s experience and familiarity with the U.S. game.

?After an extensive search and interview process, we believe Tom Sermanni is the right person at the right time to lead our Women?s National Team ? He has the knowledge, experience and vision to take on the challenge of keeping our team at the top of the world. He has a tremendous passion for the game, knows the American players, understands our system and knows the process of preparing a team for a World Cup tournament.?

Sermanni:

?U.S. Soccer has always been at the forefront of supporting the women?s game, and it?s exciting to coach the team in this next chapter of its history. After coaching against many of these players for years, I am looking forward to working with an accomplished group of veterans while integrating the numerous talented young players who are itching for a chance to prove themselves.?

Though Sermanni wasn?t one of the favorites, he?s been linked with the job since Sundhage resigned. He?s well-respected for his work (both in the States and in Australia), and his hiring is the result of a long, thorough search by Gulati and U.S. Soccer.

When speaking to the press, Gulati always insisted at least one international candidate was in the picture. Between the perpetual link and today?s the hiring of Sermanni, it looks like that candidate was always near the center, even if double-digit people were interviewed.

We?ll have reaction, analysis, perspective on the appointment as the day unfolds, but for now, we?ll let the announcement sink in. U.S. Soccer has tabbed Australia national team coach Tom Sermanni to replace Pia Sundhage.

That brings with it iPhone 5 compatibility, but the bigger news is the expanded voice search functionality, which promises "faster and significantly improved voice recognition," with spoken responses à la Google Now provided alongside the search results. Santa Clarita Foreclosure Updates for the day before Halloween ...

Nothing scary with these foreclosure updates for the Santa Clarita Valley Cities ? except for the ?lack of them?. ?We are watching as the real estate buyers are feeling as if they had been slighted by the current real estate market.

BTW ? if you want to get these updates yourself ? make sure you subscribe to our Main Foreclosure Release Alerts ? just enter your email address in the side bar of this blog ?>

With interest rates for Santa Clarita mortgages below the 3.5% mark for a 30 year fixed mortgage ? some of those buying homes are feeling as if they missed the boat. ?This is primarily because of the lacking SCV inventory in the way of Foreclosures and bank owned assets. ?Where have they all gone? When can we expect them to come back?Google Local Real Estate agents

The wait for these properties to enter the Santa Clarita real estate market as Foreclosures may be futile. ?Potentially this ?reo inventory aka shadow inventory? is going the way of the bulk sale. ?Bulk sales are when large banks sell their bad debt(reo properties) at auction. ?However, that ?Auction? is rarely public and not a one for one property proposal. ?They are selling these reo listings in chunks. ?Mostly 50+ in a group. ?Those binders are given to some of the banks? partners and top investors to give them first crack at the REO portfolio. ?After that, it is ?pitched? to other ?big money? sources. ?However, at the end of the day, after the lot is purchased, most of those properties are re-habbed and flipped.

Those are the homes you will be seeing for sale in the Santa Clarita re-sale market. ?I know what you may be thinking, what about these properties being offered up as rentals ? I?d opine that only 25% of the bulk buyers will operate in this manner. ?They have to look at several factors, one being the ?instability? of the future real estate market. ?What if ?lending? further tightened peoples ability to obtain loans? ?What is the government killed the ?tax deduction? for mortgage interest? ?Sometimes unknown variables like these reduce rental desirability by investors and bulk sale buyers to zero.

Be safe ? subscribe and let us know when you are ready to talk about your real estate goals. ?I?m Connor MacIvor ? the host with the most ;) ? sorry, could not resist?.

5 Engagement Tips You Should Just Ignore ? Feminspire

When I got engaged, I started where a lot of ladies do ? the internet. I went onto TheKnot to have a look around at some general advice and ideas, but found myself eye rolling and laughing to myself all over the place (and I don?t mean this to sound like I?m just bashing TheKnot, as they have tons of helpful information). One of the popular articles, ?Ten Things No One Tells You About Getting Engaged? offered all sorts of Big Time Truths, such as ?you will have a big zit on the day he proposes?, ?make sure you always have a manicure?, ?write down your proposal story on your wedding website so you don?t have to keep repeating it to friends and family? and ?how different your relationship will feel?. I don?t want to say that none of this is true because every relationship and engagement is individual and personal, but being concerned about a zit on your face on the day you are proposed to hardly seems like it needs to be number one on any list of concerns. Here are my opinions on a few of the ?truths?.

You will have a big zit on the day he proposes

Unless you are one of the few people who?s life lives out like a perfect Polaroid from a Mormon mommy blog (seriously though, who?s life is that beautiful?), your proposal will probably not be The Most Beautiful Moment aesthetically. You will probably realize you didn?t shave that day (or month) or you are wearing period underwear and yeah, you probably have a zit on your chin. Guess what? No one cares. Your partner won?t care, you won?t care, and if you are thrilled to be getting engaged, it will be awesome and wonderful regardless.

Make sure you always have a manicure

Pretty hands and nails are great, but if you have never had a manicure in your life or work with your hands and have a hard time keeping your cuticles flawless, that?s fine. I feel like this is the sort of advice that just makes women feel bad about themselves if they aren?t perfect. It is true that people will ask to see your hand, which is also annoying, but they are probably going to be concerned with your ring, not with the damn hangnail you can?t seem to get rid of on your thumb. If anyone takes issue with your nails not being the perfect shade of pale pink at all times, I think it?s okay to pull out the finger next to your ring.

Write down your proposal story and send friends and family the link so that they can get the full details

This isn?t a bad idea by any means, but you probably won?t have a wedding website up for at least a few months (if at all) and people are still going to ask you. If you get tired of telling it, just say that it was personal and you would prefer not to share it. Or you can say it was during sex and make them uncomfortable.

Don?t feel bad about sitting through and enjoying a TLC wedding special or two.

(continued) This is one of those guilty wedding pleasures that you?re totally allowed to indulge in while you?re engaged.

Wait, was I not allowed to do this before I was engaged? Because even when I wasn?t interested in marriage I still sometimes found myself emerging from a five hour marathon of Say Yes to the Dress with an empty pizza box in front of me and no idea how it became midnight on a Saturday night. There is absolutely no reason to feel weird or guilty ?indulging? in wedding shows and movies when you are single, engaged, married, dead, whatever, most of us have done it and will do it again.

Your relationship will feel different even if you?ve been living together for years

This is another one of those blanket statements that bugs me. However your relationship feels after getting engaged is fine, even if it feels the same. You may feel like you have reached a deeper, more intimate level with your partner, which is great, but you may also feel like nothing has changed and that is totally normal. Many couples go into engagements having already known, planned or expected it for months, which means you have probably already committed to them on that level and nothing will change.

Basically, you shouldn?t let anyone tell you how to feel after getting engaged (including me). Some have been dreaming of it since they were kids and others never even considered it, so expecting to feel exactly the same as the next person is absurd. People will have opinions on EVERYTHING, and aren?t shy about hiding their judgment. I cannot tell you how many times I heard ?so when are you going to get engaged/married?? and then when I actually was, all I heard was ?oh, but you are so young!? Then when you get married all you hear is ?when are you having a baby?!?, but that is a totally different article and at any point I think it is okay to look people straight in their face and say ?none of your damn business.?

Microgravity research coming of age on the International Space Station

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? They say that necessity is the mother of invention, so when humans decided to build and inhabit a laboratory in the harsh environment of space, it was only natural that innovations would follow. The creators of these developments sought patents to protect their intellectual property, giving a way to gauge microgravity advancements. The recently published paper, "Microgravity-Related Patent History," by Mark Uhran, looks back at the more than 818 patents granted since 1981, as related to the term "microgravity."

Uhran, former NASA director, International Space Station Division Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, points out that the use of patents as an indicator of value creation signifies economic potential. In addition to the granted patents, he cites an additional 580 applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during the last decade. There are undoubtedly station-related patents, according to Uhran, that do not include the term of microgravity. This means an even greater likelihood of additional innovations beyond those counted in his paper.

"Microgravity processing research is coming of age in much the same way that vacuum processing did at the close of the 19th century," said Uhran. "From vacuum technologies, the 20th century industrial revolution in microelectronics was born, and from microgravity technologies I predict a 21st century revolution in microbiotics that will dramatically change our approach to human health care and food production."

Developments based on microgravity investigations and exploration create compelling competition between agencies, scientists and engineers. This includes both research and technology developments, as seen in both cooperative and parallel projects that may lead to benefits for humanity.

"The fields of molecular and cellular biotechnology have already demonstrated the competitive advantages of microgravity environments," said Uhran.

The top seven patent categories include the following: biotechnologies (36%), instrumentation/analytical (13%), materials (12%), aerospace components (12%), and systems in the areas of thermal, measurement, and human health (4% each).

Macromolecular crystal growth and studies on bacterial pathogens in microgravity both show the potential from research aboard the space station to yield simultaneous beneficial developments for human health and global economies. "From the independent work of DeLucas, McPherson and Urade, we know that space is an effective tool for solving the structure of important biological macromolecules," said Uhran. "Nickerson and Hammond have both made competitive progress toward producing vaccines and therapeutics for bacterial pathogens."

While initially the U.S. government dominated microgravity-related patents, the area of industrial submissions quickly gained ground, with a continued growth that surpassed government, individual investigators and academia. These various sectors, Uhran asserts, are codependent. "The government role is to bridge the two [industry and academia] and demonstrate promise by underwriting long lead-time basic research, and proofs-of-concept for applications."

The grouping of the patent categories reveals the relationships inherent in knowledge growth and technological development. "In some cases, it's a scientific finding that enables the innovation of a new process or product on the ground that was never previously achievable," said Uhran. "In other cases, the process or product must function in the microgravity environment in order to yield an outcome that's not possible to duplicate on the ground under any conditions. Finally, a share of these patents are for products or processes that are needed to live and work in a microgravity environment."

Uhran concludes in his paper that his findings are merely the "tip of the proverbial iceberg." With the space station now at full utilization, he expects patents to grow rapidly, an indicator of advancing benefits on Earth and for future space exploration.

"Nothing could be more rewarding than to complete the International Space Station and meet all of the mission performance requirements we set back at the 1993 Critical Design Review," said Uhran. "We now have the laboratories we need, so what remains is a matter of political will and classic research portfolio management practices to capitalize on this incredible national asset."

BOOKS:REGINALD MASSEY'S BOOK PAGE - Confluence Magazine

REGINALD MASSEY?S BOOK PAGE

Normally I do not notice books written in languages other than English. However, as a special case, I have to mention the poems in Urdu by Chaman Lal Chaman, the veteran broadcaster and media man. Hailing from a Punjabi Hindu family who had migrated to Kenya, then a British colony, Chaman has worked in Britain for many years.

He is a lovely man who, very simply, is in love with humanity. His name says it all. Chaman means a perfumed garden, in the Persian sense. He is conversant with his native Punjabi as well as Hindi and Urdu. In fact, whenever he phones me we only converse in our native Ma-boli (Mother tongue) Punjabi.

His book of ghazals and geets is titled Phool Khil? Chaman Chaman (In every Garden?the Flowers Bloom). Indeed they do on every page of Chaman?s collection. Word play and puns are distinctive to Urdu poetry. Though in English poetry it has fallen into disuse, Shakespeare?s dramas are replete with puns and word play. Since not many young Asians in Britain can read the Urdu (Persian) script I must ask Chaman to get the poems translated into English by a competent person. I have for the same reason asked the Hindi poet Divya Mathur to get her marvellous Hindi poems in the Devanagri script translated into English. Else they could publish their poems in the Roman script.

Whether we like it or not, we have to accept the fact that English is the mode of international communication. The first human who strode on the face of the moon spoke to us Earthlings in English. Not in French, or Spanish, or Russian or Arabic or Hindi or Chinese. The Confucian Chinese, a pragmatic people, got the message loud and clear. They are now spending vast amounts of money to teach their intellectuals, scientists, technologists and administrators the English language. We South Asians are fortunate. The British taught us English and did not charge us a single paisa. Vive Britannia ! ?How right was the South Indian Brahmin philosopher Radhakrishnan who became President of the Indian Republic. He said that we Indians were indebted to Britain for bequeathing to us three boons: Shakespeare, the Authorized Version of the Bible and the limited liability company. And now South Asians are collecting literary prizes all over the English speaking world. Hats off to the Brits.

I am elated that fact based books are gaining popularity. After all, fact is stranger than fiction. But when a creative writer?s expertise is applied to unpalatable and disturbing facts the result is ?faction?, a potent genre of literature. A recent example was Kishwar Desai?s Origins of Love, a novel already noticed in this magazine. In the same vein is the moving Radhika?s Story: Surviving Human Trafficking by Sharon Hendry (New Holland Publishers, London. ISBN 978-1-84773-725-0. ?8.99). Hendry is a senior feature writer for The Sun, the mass circulation daily that published the LA pictures of Naughty Harry. Sharon Hendry has exposed international adoption rackets, paedophiles in Cambodia and the plot to kill Boris Berezovsky, the Russian dissident, in London. Hence Ms Hendry knows her onions.

The book tells the tragic and heartbreaking story of Radhika Phuyal, the daughter of a Brahmin family of Nepal who is tricked by a smooth-tongued conman who lures her into prostitution. Radhika is pretty, with a soft olive skin and utterly innocent. And her family is desperately poor. In South Asia poverty is a curse for all castes; but for Brahmins it is particularly painful and vindictive. The higher a girl?s caste the more she is in demand.

Low caste men yearn to ravish a Brahmin whore.

Hendry?s graphic account of conditions in north Kolkata?s notorious Sonagachi red light district is worthy of a documentary award. It was here that Radhika had to service the lust of a minimum of thirty men every single day for a set fee of 200 rupees each. If the girls in the brothel failed to meet their client target they were beaten and humiliated. On her body Radhika bears the scars of cigarette burns inflicted on her by the Madam of the brothel. The trafficking of women is a well known fact of Indian life and yet India-loving foreigners and Indians who sell the ?greatness of India? choose to ignore this obnoxious and uncomfortable fact. Didi Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and Sardar Manmohan Singh in green and clean New Delhi (thanks to the British architect Lutyens) turn a blind eye. Their eyes are fixed on the next general elections.

Radhika, still alive and miraculously free of VD and AIDS, told her story to Sharon Hendry who has, like any good reporter worth her / his salt, set down the essentials. But the matter does not end with prostitution. Radhika?s exploitation goes on to the lucrative trade in body parts. The organs taken from ?donors? are bought for about ?660 (US $1,000) and sold on to foreigners and rich Indians for ?20,000 (US $30,000).

Under false pretences Radhika was taken to a Chennai hospital (after she was drugged). There an operation was performed and one of her kidneys was removed. It was immediately transplanted on to her employer?s wife who was in the operation theatre next door.

But happily there is a ray of light at the end of the long dark tunnel. The social worker and women?s activist Anuradha Koirala has established a refuge for women such as Radhika. She and her son Rohan, at last happily reunited, are now under the care of Anuradha and her devoted volunteers.

The celebrated actor-activist Joanna Lumley writes in her Foreword: ?I felt that this story, just one of the many ? too many ? which are waiting untold in dumb silence, must be heard; and if her story prevents even one more child being sold into this appalling slavery, brave Radhika will not have suffered in vain.?

Namita Gokhale is a prolific writer and publisher and co-director with William Dalrymple of the Jaipur Literature Festival. Habit of Love (Penguin India, 2012.

ISBN 978-0-143-41772-9) is a collection of thirteen vibrant short stories written over a number of years. She confesses that they have been imagined in airports, scribbled during flights, corrected in traffic jams and deciphered from the backs of envelopes. I am glad that she has published them. Written as a very personal intimate narrative in the first person, they range from the Mahabharata to current day 21st century India which experiences all the problems and urban angsts of the western world. Khushwant Singh, the guru of Indian creative writing in the English language, recommends these stories because, he says, they grippingly describe ?death, love and lust?. I venture to suggest that Gokhale goes further. She describes, probes, exposes and teases out the very condition of humanity. Her prose is often poetic.

Her vivid descriptions of New Delhi and the British hill station of Nainital take me back over the decades. I could write a whole book about her stories in this slim volume but there are three that are particular winners. Life on Mars is about a middle aged Indian woman diagnosed with cancer. Gokhale herself had cancer and has courageously ?conquered the ?Big C?. She however insists that this story is not autobiographical. It is a tear-jerking and poignant account of the main protagonist?s warm relationship with a young man, a confirmed crank, who is obsessed with the possibility of life on Mars. And then there is the story of the young Vinita who is in Nainital with her parents when the radio announces that Nehru has died. Her parents are an ill-suited husband and wife, the result of a miserable arranged marriage. And Vinita, an aspiring writer, is caught in the crossfire.

The story about Vatshala Vidyarthi, a ?literary lady? who is based in New Delhi is absolutely brilliant. She works for an advertising agency, is unmarried but has had a couple of unpleasant affairs with incompatible Indian men. Her story is reminiscent of

J. Alfred Prufrock?s desolate existence in Eliot?s smog-laden London. And then she is sent to Rishikesh, by the banks of the Holy Ganges, on an assignment to write copy about the new Ganges Herbal range of incense-coated mosquito repellents. There she has a tempestuous and wholly satisfying one-night stand of pleasure with a Slavic sadhu who is in India in search of nirvana. Next morning she discovers herself in the disarranged bed, naked and alone. The sexual athlete has vanished and so have her keys, handbag, cash and credit cards. The story ends with a classic statement: ?? a punchline is not always essential to a good denouement?. Which itself is a punchline par excellence.

Reginald Massey?s forthcoming book is To the Gallows with Smiles: forgotten fighters for Indian Independence, to be published later this year by Hansib, London.

More migration reform: Cuba opens door to many illegal emigres and defectors

Allowing more Cubans to return to Cuba will help accelerate the warming trend between the island and its diaspora, and could lead to a change in US policy toward the island.

By Anya Landau French,?Guest blogger / October 27, 2012

People queue for Spanish visas outside the embassy in Havana October 16. In addition to easing most Cubans' exit and return, the Cuban government said they will allow Cubans who have left the island return for visits. The changes are the communist island's first major immigration reform in half a century.

After issuing reforms to its migration law last week which will give most Cubans the right to freely travel abroad without getting permission first, the Cuban government has just announced it will allow tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of Cubans who left Cuba illegally in the last two decades to return to the island for visits. This will include not only many defectors but also rafters who headed to the United States during the economic crisis that peaked in 1994 and 1995.

There are several key implications of this new policy. First, and most importantly, it is another significant step in the normalization of relations with the Cuban diaspora. Certainly, any visits made by these Cubans abroad will bring economic benefits to the island. But allowing more Cubans to return to the island of their birth will help accelerate the warming trend between the island and its diaspora. More Cuban Americans, for instance, will now have a stake in U.S. policies that increase their access to the island - and their relatives' access to the US. They will also be less inclined to press for or support sanctions that could harm their loved ones or that could jeopardize this new, more open relationship with the island.

RELATED: Think you know Latin America? take our geography quiz!

But will the strongest opponents of the Cuban government welcome these reforms? Not necessarily. These reforms and their impact on Cuban Americans' attitudes only spell trouble for the US embargo. More and more, it's unclear who really wants the policy to stay in place, and a day will come when the momentum will shift to the reformers, rather than remaining with a dwindling number of supporters of the isolationist status quo.

In particular, Cuba's new migration policies could put pressure on key elements of the embargo, such as the wet-foot, dry-foot policy, and even the Cuba Adjustment Act. Each of these policies was created for Cubans fleeing the island. Together they make it easier for Cubans to arrive illegally and to apply for a green card in just one year's time. With so many Cubans able to come and go without persecution by the Cuban government, what remains the basis for these policies?

AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some people's more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.

Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.

"We have this false idea that there is uniformity in progress and that things change in one big step. That is not the way history has worked," said Jelani Cobb, professor of history and director of the Institute for African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut. "When we've seen progress, we've also seen backlash."

Obama has tread cautiously on the subject of race, but many African-Americans have talked openly about perceived antagonism toward them since Obama took office. As evidence, they point to events involving police brutality or cite bumper stickers, cartoons and protest posters that mock the president as a lion or a monkey, or lynch him in effigy.

"Part of it is growing polarization within American society," said Fredrick Harris, director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University. "The last Democrat in the White House said we had to have a national discussion about race. There's been total silence around issues of race with this president. But, as you see, whether there is silence, or an elevation of the discussion of race, you still have polarization. It will take more generations, I suspect, before we eliminate these deep feelings."

Overall, the survey found that by virtue of racial prejudice, Obama could lose 5 percentage points off his share of the popular vote in his Nov. 6 contest against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But Obama also stands to benefit from a 3 percentage point gain due to pro-black sentiment, researchers said. Overall, that means an estimated net loss of 2 percentage points due to anti-black attitudes.

The poll finds that racial prejudice is not limited to one group of partisans. Although Republicans were more likely than Democrats to express racial prejudice in the questions measuring explicit racism (79 percent among Republicans compared with 32 percent among Democrats), the implicit test found little difference between the two parties. That test showed a majority of both Democrats and Republicans held anti-black feelings (55 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans), as did about half of political independents (49 percent).

Obama faced a similar situation in 2008, the survey then found.

The AP developed the surveys to measure sensitive racial views in several ways and repeated those studies several times between 2008 and 2012.

The explicit racism measures asked respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements about black and Hispanic people. In addition, the surveys asked how well respondents thought certain words, such as "friendly," ''hardworking," ''violent" and "lazy," described blacks, whites and Hispanics.

The same respondents were also administered a survey designed to measure implicit racism, in which a photo of a black, Hispanic or white male flashed on the screen before a neutral image of a Chinese character. The respondents were then asked to rate their feelings toward the Chinese character. Previous research has shown that people transfer their feelings about the photo onto the character, allowing researchers to measure racist feelings even if a respondent does not acknowledge them.

Results from those questions were analyzed with poll takers' ages, partisan beliefs, views on Obama and Romney and other factors, which allowed researchers to predict the likelihood that people would vote for either Obama or Romney. Those models were then used to estimate the net impact of each factor on the candidates' support.

All the surveys were conducted online. Other research has shown that poll takers are more likely to share unpopular attitudes when they are filling out a survey using a computer rather than speaking with an interviewer. Respondents were randomly selected from a nationally representative panel maintained by GfK Custom Research.

Overall results from each survey have a margin of sampling error of approximately plus or minus 4 percentage points. The most recent poll, measuring anti-black views, was conducted Aug. 30 to Sept. 11.

Andra Gillespie, an Emory University political scientist who studies race-neutrality among black politicians, contrasted the situation to that faced by the first black mayors elected in major U.S. cities, the closest parallel to Obama's first-black situation. Those mayors, she said, typically won about 20 percent of the white vote in their first races, but when seeking reelection they enjoyed greater white support presumably because "the whites who stayed in the cities ... became more comfortable with a black executive."

"President Obama's election clearly didn't change those who appear to be sort of hard-wired folks with racial resentment," she said.

Negative racial attitudes can manifest in policy, noted Alan Jenkins, an assistant solicitor general during the Clinton administration and now executive director of the Opportunity Agenda think tank.

"That has very real circumstances in the way people are treated by police, the way kids are treated by teachers, the way home seekers are treated by landlords and real estate agents," Jenkins said.

Hakeem Jeffries, a New York state assemblyman and candidate for a congressional seat being vacated by a fellow black Democrat, called it troubling that more progress on racial attitudes had not been made. Jeffries has fought a New York City police program of "stop and frisk" that has affected mostly blacks and Latinos but which supporters contend is not racially focused.

"I do remain cautiously optimistic that the future of America bends toward the side of increased racial tolerance," Jeffries said. "We've come a long way, but clearly these results demonstrate there's a long way to go."

I'm a Democrat Because I'm a Mormon - Religion News Service

A couple of weeks ago my bumper sticker arrived, the one I had to special order. ?I?m voting for Obama,? it proclaimed, ??and I?m a Mormon.?

In the last year, the LDS Church?s popular ?I?m a Mormon? ads have created a brand with Mormons identifying themselves in an unexpected way (e.g., ?I?m a drummer in a rock band!? or ?I?m a competitive motorcyclist!?) and then following it up with the tagline, ?and I?m a Mormon.?

But in my case, a different conjunction is in order. ?And? is not enough. I?m voting for Obama because I am a Mormon.

I?m not alone in this, though as a Mormon Democrat I am a minority within a minority. There are more of us than people assume, even though in the current election, with a fellow Latter-day Saint running for president, approximately 84 percent of Mormons say they?ll be voting for Mitt Romney. This is significantly higher than the 60-odd percent of Mormons who self-identified as Republican in the 2006 Faith Matters Survey.

It hasn?t always been this way. In fact, at one time Mormons swung very much in the other direction. In the 1896 presidential election, 51 percent of the nation?s popular vote went to Republican William McKinley, but in the spanking new state of Utah McKinley captured only an anemic showing of 17.3 percent. According to Notre Dame political scientist David E. Campbell, Mormons went heavily for populist Democrat William Jennings Bryan that year instead.

The Democratic trend continued. From 1932 to 1948, Mormons echoed national sentiments by repeatedly electing Democrats FDR and Harry Truman to office, often by a larger margin than the rest of the nation. In 1964, Lyndon Johnson carried Utah by ten percentage points, and throughout the 1970s the Utah state legislature was solidly Democratic. (And there is evidence from sociologist Armand Mauss that Mormons outside of Utah were more liberal than their Utah counterparts on political and social issues, so the Utah voting patterns are probably a bit more conservative than American Mormons more generally.)

So. What happened to my people?

The LDS Church is careful as an institution to remain politically neutral, so how did the vast majority of American Mormons veer so far to the right?

Since the 1970s, Mormons have increasingly allied themselves with Republicans in matters political, as if the GOP is, as the old joke goes, God?s own party. Utah has become so reliably Republican that neither major party even campaigns there in force for presidential politics. For Republicans, winning Utah is a fait accompli, so why spend time and money there? For Democrats, winning Utah is an outlandish fantasy, so why spend time and money there?

Most everybody loses in a single-party system, so I?m proud to stand in a long tradition of Mormons who have voted on the other side. But it isn?t just history that drives me to be a Mormon Democrat; it?s belief.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to ensure that the poor are cared for. I believe the Book of Mormon?s explicit claims that our standing with God rests upon how we treat the poor?not just as individuals, but as societies. (King Benjamin?s sermon is a case in point.) As a Mormon I am called to vote for candidates who won?t stomp on the poor.

Romney does not look promising on this score. In fact, he appears more concerned with lining the pockets of the rich. According to the Tax Policy Center (as reported in the October issue of Money magazine), people earning more than $500,000 a year will get an 10% increase in after-tax earnings under Romney?s plan.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to protect life. This means all life, whether it?s ending the war in Iraq (thank you, President Obama) or decreasing the number of actual abortions that occur in America (thank you, President Clinton).

Republicans talk a big game about outlawing abortion, all while implementing policies that effectively contribute to abortion?s tragic proliferation. They want to cut health care, including programs like WIC; make contraception less available to women; end sex education in schools; and have no federal subsidies for child care. Those are all policies that chip away at women?s non-abortion options, particularly since women who live below the poverty line are four times as likely to have an abortion as women who do not.

As a Mormon, it?s my job to be a good steward of the earth. For all that Romney belongs to the same church I do, he does not seem remotely concerned about our planet?s future. He has mocked forward-thinking attempts to invest in clean energy sources and raising the standards for gas mileage in new cars. He calls the EPA ?a tool in the hands of the president to crush the private enterprise system.? His views on the environment are short-sighted.

Let me say it again: I am voting for Obama because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it.

Players will know that at that time, the current version of FINAL FANTASY XIV will go offline. However, it would appear that the severs going down isn?t the only thing that this counts down to. Twitter user GaiusvanBaelsar discovered that when the countdown finishes, it provides a link to a new trailer titled ?End of an Era?. At present, the link will provide an error as the page is not yet up.

However, fans should keep their eyes peeled as it seems a new trailer is now confirmed to be landing on November 11th.

Candidates seek foreign policy edge in 3rd debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Still neck-and-neck after all these months, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney head into their third and final debate with each man eager to project an aura of personal strength and leadership while raising doubts about the steadiness and foreign policy credentials of the other guy.

Each is aiming for a commanding performance Monday to settle the seesaw dynamics of the first two debates: Romney gave Obama an old-fashioned shellacking in the first round, and the chastened president rebounded in their second encounter.

The 90-minute faceoff at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., offers the candidates their last opportunity to stand one-on-one before tens of millions of Americans and command their undivided attention before next month's election. Both candidates largely dropped out of sight and devoted their weekends to debate preparations, a sure sign of the high importance they attach to the event.

While the principals warm up for their evening debate in the battleground state of Florida, their running mates will be busy Monday seeking votes in two of the eight other states whose up-for-grabs electoral votes will determine the next president ? Vice President Joe Biden in Ohio and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan in Colorado. Also still hotly contested: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Virginia.

Deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Monday that "it really now comes down to that small segment of undecided voters."

Appearing on NBC's "Today" show, Cutter said, "The ground game is in credibly important at this point. We feel pretty good about where we are."

Hours before the debate was to begin, the Obama campaign announced a new television ad with a rare focus on foreign policy while most other television spots have been on economic and other domestic issues. The ad talked about the costs of the past decade of war over an image of a soldier with a prosthetic leg. It pointed out that Obama ended the war in Iraq and said Romney would have kept forces in the country longer to help with the transition.

Campaign surrogates went on Sunday talk shows to frame the foreign policy matters that moderator Bob Schieffer will put before the candidates in a discussion sure to reflect "how dangerous the world is in which we live," as the CBS newsman put it. Iran's nuclear intentions, the bloody crackdown in Syria, economic angst in Europe, security concerns in Afghanistan, China's growing power ? all that and more are on the agenda.

On Iran, senior Romney campaign foreign policy adviser Dan Senor said on NBC Monday that Romney's approach is that "we've got to reach a diplomatic solution." He said the Obama administration's policy on Iran for the past four years has not discouraged Tehran from moving forward with its nuclear ambitions.

On Libya, Senor said "they didn't have the proper security" at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed on Sept. 11.

The series of interviews Sunday and Monday fed into the broader debate over which candidate offers the steady hand and sound judgment for a nation facing myriad challenges at home and abroad.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, arguing for the Republicans, faulted Obama for "his failure to outline broad goals, real goals, a real view of what America's role in the world should be." Romney, by contrast, would "use America's role in the world as a catalyst for peace, prosperity and freedom," he said.

Ryan, campaigning in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Sunday, faulted the president for potential defense cuts and said that when adversaries "see us projecting weakness, when they see us hollowing out our military ... they think we are a superpower in decline." It was a likely preview of one of Romney's arguments in the debate.

Obama adviser David Axelrod said that when the president took office "we were isolated in our position on Iran and in the world. And today, the world is unified against Iran with us, all because of the leadership of this president."

The Obama campaign released a blistering memo from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., accusing Romney of offering nothing but "endless bluster" on international issues.

"He is an extreme and expedient candidate who lacks the judgment and vision so vital for the Oval Office," said Kerry, who is considered a leading candidate to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state if Obama wins a second term.

When it comes to their foreign policy credentials, both candidates have reasons for optimism and concern: While foreign policy has been a strength of Obama throughout the campaign, some recent polls show his advantage narrowing. The Pew Research Center's October poll, for example, found that 47 percent of Americans favored Obama to make "wise decisions about foreign policy," while 43 percent preferred Romney.

American University professor Jordan Tama said the difficult trick for Romney in the debate will be to challenge Obama on foreign policy without looking like he's criticizing the commander in chief, which can be off-putting to voters. Obama, for his part, must make the case that his policies are sound and his leadership strong despite ongoing challenges around the world, including unrest in the Middle East and the chaotic situation in Libya that left four Americans dead.

While foreign policy has been overshadowed during this campaign by concerns about the domestic economy and jobs at home, everything matters in a race this tight. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Sunday showed each candidate favored by 47 percent of likely voters, reflecting a boost of support for Romney following his strong performance in the first debate in early October.

With early voting under way in many states, there is precious little time for the candidates to break loose. More than 4 million Americans already have voted.
