Some Hammonds Ferry residents are concerned about rumored baseball stadium

"No!"

That's what George Batten had to say about a new home for the Augusta Green Jackets in his back yard.
People living in Hammonds Ferry and surrounding neighborhoods came to the city council meeting expecting the stadium project to be the topic. But Mayor Jones said the meeting is not about,

"Baseball and those short of things."

The council did approve an agreement with the orginial developer of Hammonds Ferry to build 8,000 square feet in retail space and 15,000 square feet that would include, single family homes, a bed and breakfast, restuarnts, and possibly a Family-Y with a pool.

Mayor Jones said anything beyond that for right now is just,

"Rumors."

And while Batten seems to be ok with what was approved tonight. His concern is what a baseball stadium might bring.

"Noise, lights. I just don't think you can manage all that. I was driving up here and I just live around in Hammonds Ferry, and I said if there was a baseball game going on, I would not be able to get here."

Will Caskey, who didn't make it to the meeting, but also lives in the neighborhood, disagrees.

"It would just be such a huge win for North Augusta and unforutanely downtown Augusta's loss."

Caskey, doesn't believe a stadium would bring crime,

"I think that's fear monguring from people that just dont want it in their back yard."

But for George, it's all about the location.

"Doesnt seem like the best use, in my mind for river front property."
