Alec Foege Calls for Change - Pilant's Business Ethics

Alec Foege Calls for Change

Alec Foege Calls for Change? The Tinkerers?: How corporations kill creativity by Alex Foege ? Salon.com

In August 2010, Paul Krugman published a piece in the New York Times titled ?America Goes Dark.? He described how the United States, ?a country that once amazed the world with its visionary investments in transportation, from the Erie Canal to the Interstate Highway System? was now dismantling its infrastructure.

Krugman?s main point was that the U.S. government was not investing stimulus funds in the tools needed for our own economic growth. Three decades of antigovernment rhetoric had convinced many Americans that spending taxpayer funds on anything was a waste of taxpayer funds. But government?the US government, specifically?had built this country into an innovative economic powerhouse by investing in ?lighted streets, drivable roads and decent schooling for the public as a whole.?

I would take Krugman?s point one step further and argue that the American government and people helped the country grow both by investing in innovation and by committing themselves to the traditional tinkerer spirit. A sophisticated, cutting-edge infrastructure was the perfect crucible for the kind of innovation the United States embodied.

The point about the devolution of tinkering in American life is not that we have lost a physical connection to the work that we do. It?s that the notion that we can fix any problem or achieve any goal that we set for ourselves has deteriorated into a sanitized, corporatized version of what constitutes achievement.

Corporate America has grown rigid as it has grown larger. Despite the dot-com era?s many images of creative whizzes reweaving the very fabric of innovation, it remains extremely difficult for the freethinking alchemists of today to perform their peculiar strain of magic and thrive while doing it.

?The Tinkerers?: How corporations kill creativity ? Salon.com

This was a great article much longer than the brief excerpt I have placed here. If at all possible, please go to Salon and read the whole thing. The gentleman has several books out, so you might want to look into acquiring those as well.

I have been told by people flying into the United States how run down the place looks. There are reports that say this country needs about 2.2 trillion dollars just to get even in terms of infrastructure.?

Yet, these pressing needs seem to register very little as a governmental concern. We?ve already had collapsing dikes and bridges. What kind of crisis will it take to make this a critical issue that gets addressed?

Maybe the flesh is willing but the spirit is weak? Where?s that ?can do? spirit that built buildings, monuments and wonders of technology? Where has that gone?

I like to read yearbooks from the 1960?s, Britannica, World Book, etc. and in them I find a spirit of optimism and a certainty of success that no longer is predominant in our culture. Much of our current angst can be traced to the thought that things are only going to get worse.?

I agree with Mr. Foege, we need change.

We need to act and we can?t wait for the ?road fairy? to repair out problems.

James Pilant

P.S. You could argue that there is no business ethics here. After all we aren?t speaking of deliberate sabotage of America?s infrastructure. Certainly I hope not. But business ethics is also a positive force. Good business ethics would embrace creativity and long term growth as manifested in infrastructure development and preservation.

From around the web,

From the web site, ASCE, American Society of Civil Engineers:

In mid-January, the American Society of Civil Engineers (asce) convened a series of five roundtables in Washington, D.C., that were
conceived as in-depth discussions of how best to address the nation?s significant infrastructure deficiencies, which threaten not only the safety
and welfare of the public but also the nation?s economic growth and competitiveness. Each roundtable had its own moderator and slate of
participants, and the participants included well-respected political leaders, policy leaders, and members of asce who are well versed on the
subject of critical infrastructure. The starting points for these discussions were the five key solutions outlined in asce?s 2009 Report Card for
America?s Infrastructure, which was released in March 2009. In essence what these roundtables were striving to achieve was to develop a
framework for giving full dimension to these solutions and securing for them positions of high visibility and high priority on the national agenda.
which was released in 2003. The 2001 report card conferred an overall grade of D+; the 2005 report card, a D; and the 2009 report card, a D. The 2003 progress report
also conferred a grade of D. These assessments have trained a spotlight on the fact that America?s critical infrastructure?principally its roads, bridges, drinking
water systems, mass transit systems, schools, and systems for delivering energy?may soon fail to meet society?s needs. The underlying threats?and these threats are quite significant?are those of deteriorating
economic strength within the global marketplace and a diminished quality of life across the spectrum of American society.

From the web site, Class Warfare Blog:

Now is the time to act to bring up the level of repair of our infrastructure. The reasons?
? the cost of borrowing the money to do this is approximately 0%. We will never get a better deal.
? the number of out-of-work construction workers is huge which has depressed the cost of labor.
? the money paid to the architects and engineers and laborers and suppliers of raw materials and truck drivers will be spent almost immediately by those folks which will stimulate the economy. Plus there is time for the money those folks spend to be spent again (by the subsequent recipients) before the next year is out, amplifying the effect. (Economists call this the multiplier effect. In this case $1 spend on construction creates well over $1 of economic activity.)
? the problems with our infrastructure will only get worse and will cost even more as time goes on. It is not like they will ?heal themselves? like a cold will if you just wait.
? all of the expenditures will go to Americans and American companies. The jobs cannot be ?outsourced.?

If China is willing to lend us the money to make this nation stronger, creating jobs that generate more than enough tax revenue to pay off those loans, we will be fools if we don?t act. The more we wait the more it costs us in the long run.

From the web site, Reboot Illinois:

?Over the next several decades, Illinois? infrastructure needs will likely exceed $300 billion, yet the state does not have a comprehensive plan to address this critical need. There are real costs associated with underfunding of infrastructure: shipping and travel delays, congestion, pollution, and diminished economic growth.? State Budget Crisis Task Force Illinois Report.

And finally, from the web site, Save America?s Infrastructure:

For the U.S. economy?to be the most competitive country in the world we need a first class infrastructure system?transport systems that move people and goods efficiently and at reasonable cost by land, water and air; transmission systems that deliver reliable, low-cost power from a wide range of energy sources, and water systems that drive industrial processes as well as the daily functions in our homes. Infrastructure is the foundation that connects the nation?s businesses, communities and people, driving our economy and improving our quality of life.

ASCE urges the administration and Congress to focus on policies that will create jobs and continue to grow the economy. ASCE will work with the new Congress and the President to rebuild and revitalize the very foundation of our national economy. Roads, bridges, levees, and dams not only provide security, but also allow businesses to move goods, reach global markets, grow their market share and create new jobs.

Rihanna And Chris Brown Back Together Again 2012? RiRi & Breezy Fly To Africa [VIDEO]

Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together again! 2012's most controversial couple were caught flying into the Ivory Coast where Breezy is scheduled to perform. Watch the video here or below:

Like Us on Facebook

Rihanna joined Chris Brown on his trip to Africa, where the rapper-singer-dancer is set to play a set at the Kora Awards tonight. Our question is: will RiRi join Breezy onstage?

It's been a long time since Rihanna and Chris Brown were together onstage. Over the past few months RiRi has been trying to keep her relationship with Breezy a secret. But the two are clearly back together again and dating. They've been spotted cozying up in public around the world?and tweeting pictures of each other, prompting rumors that a secret marriage may be in the works or that the Bajan beauty may be pregnant.

Rihanna and Chris Brown were recently spotted together in LA at a Lakers-Knicks game, where the controversial couple sat side-by-side, but managed to keep their hands of each other for the entire night--or at least until they got home.

If Chris Brown and Rihanna are getting ready to go public that they are back together again then a performance at the Kora Awards, which Perez Hilton calls the "Sub-Saharan Africa's version of the Grammy's."

The appearance of Rihanna and Chris Brown together earlier today at the African airport has sparked rumors that RiRi may join Breezy onstage for his scheduled performance, driving up ticket sales, according to Slate Afrique.

The French-language news-site noted that it appears Rihanna and Chris Brown will use the opportunity in Africa to officially tell the world that they're back together.

In a video interview with some of the Kora Award organizers, one French-speaking man hints that Rihanna and Chris Brown may get back together onstage for a moment he described as "magical." You can watch the full interview here?via grandpoucet.

Rihanna and Chris Brown's appearance in Africa together certainly too us by surprise. We're still betting that the rumors about RiRi and Breezy's secret New Years marriage are true. The controversial couple can still make it back to Barbados for their wedding before 2013 begins, but it looks like they may just make it in time!

Rihanna and Chris Brown have been back together in secret for the past few years. Even while Breezy was dating Karrueche, rumors that he was seeing RiRi on the side continued to fly. Pretty much everyone was sad to hear that the Bajan beauty was together again with the man who brutally assaulted her in 2009, when they were publicly dating.

Immediately after the assault Rihanna dumped Chris Brown. Breezy's still on probation today, but Rihanna has told the world that she's forgiven her ex-boyfriend, and it looks like it may be to late to stop the controversial couple from getting back together again.

Rihanna even decided to feature Chris Brown on "Nobody's Business," one of the songs of her new album "Unapologetic." So the message is pretty clear: RiRi and Breezy are back together, it's nobody's business, and they are not apologizing!

Then again, it looks like Rihanna and Chris Brown may get back together onstage in Africa tonight!

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) ? With the NFC East title on the line, Tony Romo threw interceptions on each of Dallas' first two possessions Sunday night, and Washington kicker Kai Forbath missed a field-goal try for the first time in his NFL career, leaving the Cowboys and Redskins tied 0-0 after the first quarter.

It was a win-or-go-home game moved into prime time to mark the end of the NFL's regular season: Whichever team lost would miss the playoffs, and the winner would host the wild-card Seattle Seahawks in a first-round game next weekend.

Washington and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III won the coin toss, got the ball first and went three-and-out, with Dwayne Harris' 28-yard punt return setting up Dallas at the Washington 27.

But on Dallas' third play on offense, Romo's pass was picked off by Redskins rookie Richard Crawford. Walking to the sideline, Romo gave intended receiver Kevin Ogletree a talking-to.

The Redskins then drove into field-goal range, before Forbath sent his 37-yard attempt off the right upright, ending his NFL-record streak of 17 consecutive makes to begin a career. Forbath made two field goals last week to surpass Saints kicker Garrett Hartley's old mark of 16 in a row.

Dallas' second drive also ended with Romo's pass getting picked off, this time by cornerback Josh Wilson at Washington's 13. The Redskins again did not capitalize, needing to punt the ball back.

The Cowboys were seeking the first division title and playoff berth since 2009. The Redskins, meanwhile, sought their first trip to the postseason since 2007 ? and first NFC East championship since 1999. Washington finished in last place each of the past four seasons.

Washington entered the day on a six-game winning streak and with a 9-6 record, while Dallas came in 8-7.

A victory over Dallas would make Washington the first club since the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars to get to the playoffs after opening 3-6.

U.S. Medical Doctors Launch Petition to Secure White House Response to Organ Harvesting Atrocities in China

NEW YORK ? A trio of medical doctors initiated a petition yesterday calling upon the Obama administration to investigate and help stop forced organ harvesting from Falun Gong believers in China. The petition is posted within the ?We the People? section of the White House website, whose regulations state that the White House guarantees a response to any petition that secures 25,000 signatures within 30 days.

?We are very concerned about one of the most horrifying crimes against humanity of our time: Forced organ harvesting from living ?prisoners? in China. Killing for parts is a gross violation of medical ethics.? state Drs. Arhur Caplan, Alejandro Centurion and Jianchao Xu in an open letter they released upon initiating the petition.?The petition is available at:?http://wh.gov/5Jmn. A website with background information and the full text of the letter was created at?www.organpetition.org.?

Arthur Caplan, Ph.D, is director of medical ethics with New York University's Langone Medical Center. Dr. Centurion is a practicing physician in California, while Dr. Jianchao Xu is a kidney specialist with Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Amidst efforts to end unethical medical practices around the world, all three doctors have been working over the past six years to investigate, expose, and put an end to organ transplant abuses in China.?

As the Falun Dafa Information Center has reported previously, since 2006, evidence has emerged of organ harvesting from illegally imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners (fact sheet). Unlike other countries, China has no large-scale voluntary organ donation system, so instead, military hospitals use prisoners. Experts now estimate that tens of thousands of jailed Falun Gong believers and other prisoners have been systematically examined, and then used as a living organ donor bank, killed on demand to fuel China's lucrative transplant industry.

The U.S. State Department?s 2011 Human Rights Report cited allegations of organ harvesting from Falun Gong believers and other prisoners of conscience. In October, 106 members of Congress wrote to Secretary Clinton requesting the release of information the State Department is believed to have about the gruesome practice. Two Congressional hearings have covered the topic, while leading transplantation doctors and medical organizations from around the world have condemned this crime against humanity.

New Tang Dynasty Television released a short documentary in November exposing forced organ harvesting crimes in China (view online).

The Falun Dafa Information Center is calling upon all Americans to sign this petition and provide President Obama with the support he needs to publicly condemn these crimes, and launch an in-depth investigation into who is responsible and how they can be stopped.

History has repeatedly taught us that remaining silent in the face of such horror is to be complicit. Let us take a stand.

Essential Background

In July of 1999, China's autocratic Communist Party launched an unlawful campaign of arrests, violence, and propaganda against Chinese citizens practicing Falun Gong (or "Falun Dafa") with the intent of "eradicating" the apolitical practice. Former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin launched the persecution fearing the practice's growing popularity among the Chinese people (70 to 100 million) was overshadowing his own legacy (article). Since then, the Falun Dafa Information Center, based in New York, has reported over 3,500 deaths from abuse and over 80,000 cases of torture. The United Nations, Amnesty International, Chinese human rights lawyers, and foreign media have also documented Falun Gong torture and deaths at the hands of Chinese officials (samples). Hundreds of thousands of Chinese who practice Falun Gong remain in captivity, rendering them the single largest group of prisoners of conscience in China (article). Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline that is Buddhist in nature, but not part of the religion of Buddhism. It consists of slow-moving "qigong" exercises, meditation, and teachings for daily life centered on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance (about Falun Gong).

Cave dwelling nettle discovered in China

Dec. 28, 2012 ? South West China, Myanmar and Northern Vietnam contain one of the oldest exposed outcrops of limestone in the world. Within this area are thousands of caves and gorges. It is only recently that botanists have sought to explore the caves for plants. This exploration is yielding many new species new to science, that are known only from these habitats.

The current study was published in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

Kew botanist and nettle expert Alex Monro says, "When my Chinese colleague Wei Yi-Gang from the Guangxi Institute of Botany first mentioned cave-dwelling plants to me, I thought that he was mis-translating a Chinese word into English. When we stepped into our first cave, Yangzi cave, I was spell-bound. It had an eerie moonscape look to it and all I could see were clumps of plants in the nettle family growing in very dark condition."

The plants do not grow in complete darkness but do grow in extremely low light levels, deep within the entrance caverns of the caves (sometimes, in as little as 0.04% full sunlight). The British and Chinese authors have been collecting plants from the Nettle family in this limestone landscape for several years and have just published a paper describing three new species, one from a cave and another two from deep gorges.

The cave-dwelling nettle species in question, was found growing in two caves in the Guangxi province of China. Of the species discovered in gorges, one is known from an unusual and striking rock mineral formation called petaloid travertine. Petaloid travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs that over time forms large petals of rock, in this case clinging to the vertical walls of a gorge.

These plants are members of a genus of Nettles known as Pilea, that is believed to have over 700 species Worldwide, up to one third of which may remain undescribed.

Chris Matthews Gets Boost From 2012 Election

NEW YORK ? To his boss, Chris Matthews has become a statesman. His critics probably have other words.

The veteran MSNBC host raised his profile as much as any member of the television commentariat during the presidential campaign. His 5 p.m. "Hardball" show has seen viewership jump by 24 percent this year from 2011, 17 percent for the rerun two hours later.

Matthews symbolized MSNBC's growing comfort in being a liberal alternative to Fox News Channel. He engaged in an uncomfortable on-air confrontation with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, seemed nearly apoplectic when President Barack Obama flubbed his first debate and had to apologize for appearing grateful that Hurricane Sandy might have helped Obama's re-election effort.

With Keith Olbermann out of sight, Matthews essentially replaced him as the commentator that most annoyed conservative viewers.

"During the run-up to the Iraq War, he just became really, really partisan and became even more so when MSNBC decided to become the anti-Fox," said Geoff Dickens, who used to watch Matthews as a fan and now monitors him regularly as part of his job with the conservative Media Research Center.

Matthews is not afraid to say what he thinks. He's a former newspaper columnist and one-time aide to a 1980s era Democrat, House Speaker Tip O'Neill. He seriously considered running for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania a few years back, where he probably would have been asked repeatedly to explain why he voted for George W. Bush in 2000.

He's a motor-mouth infused with a love of politics that borders on the pathological.

"He's as good as he's ever been," said Phil Griffin, MSNBC president. "He's at a place in his life where he's really comfortable in his own skin. He's a statesman. He has so much knowledge and I think he understands it better. He's always been great, but I really think he's been at the peak of his game."

Iraq turned Matthews against Bush. He said war and peace, and civil rights, are the issues that drive him most and explain his enthusiasm for Obama.

Matthews seemed personally offended by efforts in individual states to tighten voter registration and identification laws. Republicans called it an attempt to curb voter fraud; Matthews said it was to suppress voters friendly to Obama. He said Republicans would use welfare and other issues to subtly appeal to white voters still uncomfortable with a black president.

"The number of African-Americans who have come up to me in the last three to six months has been unbelievable," Matthews said in a recent interview. "They come up, six inches from my face, and say `thank you.' A lot of the times they say we can't do this like you do it. It's harder for them because it sounds like complaining." He's disappointed that more whites didn't express gratitude, too.

His repeated attention to the issue "irritates some people, because they can't stand being called bigoted. It drives them crazy. And I agree, it would drive me crazy."

The issue drove his confrontation with Prebius, which occurred on "Morning Joe" during the GOP convention. Matthews challenged Prebius about playing the "race card" during the campaign and for references to Obama's birth certificate. It devolved into a schoolyard insult match.

"He should have kept it together in terms of tone," Griffin said. "But in what was said, going back and forth, it was a legitimate point."

Prebius later called Matthews "the biggest jerk in the room." Matthews doesn't seem to have any regrets.

"I'd been talking like that for awhile," he said. "He didn't like it. I didn't expect he would. I felt that I had in my presence the guy who represented the party and it was an opportunity I shouldn't let pass. It's one of those moments in the campaign that's going to have endurance."

The one quote Republican critics repeatedly throw back at Matthews is when he reacted to an Obama speech in 2008 by saying "I felt this thrill going up my leg."

Matthews points out that he said something similar in 2004, after Obama addressed the Democratic national convention. Its frequent citation annoys Matthews, who knows it will never leave him, but probably also because he thinks people miss the point. He was speaking more about what Obama represented ? a black man seeking the highest office in a land with a troubled racial history ? than Obama himself.

It hasn't exempted himself from some high-level teasing, like when Obama appeared at the campaign's Al Smith dinner after the president's disastrous first debate.

"I particularly want to apologize to Chris Matthews," Obama said. "Four years ago I gave him a thrill up his leg. This time around, I gave him a stroke."

Matthews said "Hardball" has gotten a sharper focus. The editorial opinion has moved to the front of the show. Saying what he thinks isn't hard; Matthews' flirtation with running for the Senate ended in part because the need to adhere to party orthodoxy wouldn't mix with a man comfortable with voicing a dozen opinions per minute.

"I never want to do what everybody else is doing," he said. "I don't want to be part of the chorus."

Like most in his trade, Matthews seems a little lost with the end of a long campaign. He's done a few speculative 2016 stories, not recognizing the subject is enough to send most people screaming from the room.

Every day is one day closer to another election, though.

"He is sort of the model figure for who we are," Griffin said. "He doesn't stick out loving politics and being passionate about politics. It comes across in everything we do ... And that's Chris."

5 Tips for Choosing an Online Marketing Specialist | Virtual Assistant ...

Online Marketing SpecialistOnline Marketing is one of the most effective ways to generate new customers and profits for your local business. This is primarily due to the fact that most consumers go online to search for local products, services, and businesses that can provide what they?re looking for.

However, business owners are busy actually ?running their businesses?? so they have very little time to implement online marketing strategies all on their own. First, they would have to spend a great deal of time learning the ins and outs of each method. Then, they would have to thoroughly implement, test, track, and refine those methods on an ongoing basis if they want to get the best results.

As you can imagine, this would be a huge, daunting task for any business owner to take on. However, it does not mean that internet marketing should be ignored or avoided ? that would be a huge mistake.

Instead, business owners must find the appropriate resources and help to get the job done. But many of them prolong the process because they still haven?t found an Online Marketing Specialist that they know, like, and trust with their marketing efforts.

Here are 5 tips to help you choose an Online Marketing Specialist:

1. Set-up an appointment with them to get to know them. You probably receive tons of phone calls, emails, and direct mail pieces from online marketing specialists all over the world.? If you?re struggling to move forward with your online marketing initiatives simply because you?re stuck on choosing a consultant, go ahead and break the ice.

Once you start a dialogue with someone, you can truly get a feel for whether or not that person is right for you.? Have a list of questions that are important to you and pay close attention to their answers. Within just a few minutes of speaking with someone, you should be able to figure out whether or not they really have your business?s best interest at hand.

2. Make sure they understand ?local? online marketing. There are some online marketing consultants who will try to sell you tools and systems that do not help at all when it comes to getting more ?local? online exposure.? So be sure to ask them if they specialize in ?local? marketing.

3. Make sure they fully analyze your particular situation and can provide recommendations. Beware of marketing consultants who jump the gun and try to sell you something right off the bat. A professional consultant will ask you some detailed questions about your business so they can provide the most effective, targeted solutions that will help you get more local online visibility.

4. Make sure they can help you with various areas of online marketing ? not just one. Some marketing consultants are focused on selling shiny objects; but in order to really make the internet work for you, there are several things you must do. For instance, a beautiful website is nothing if you?re not getting any traffic to that website. Likewise, a bunch of traffic is nothing if you don?t have effective conversion tools on your website that will turn visitors into customers.

5. Ask about pricing so you know what to expect. Just keep in mind that ?cheaper price? could end up meaning ?lack of service? ? you get what you pay for most of the time. On the other hand, don?t assume that just because someone is charging premium prices that they will provide premium services.

As you can see, there are several factors to consider before choosing an Online Marketing specialist. But don?t let your own fears stop you from moving forward; instead, choose someone to help you so you can finally get in front of local consumers online.

Jobless claims fall to lowest level in nearly five years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Consumer confidence fell more than expected in December, hitting a four-month low as a looming fiscal crisis sapped what had been a growing sense of optimism about the economy.

Other data on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment aid fell last week to nearly its lowest level in 4 1/2 years, while new home sales last month hit their highest level since April 2010.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes fell to 65.1 from 71.5 in November.

Gauges of business sentiment have weakened recently on worries about $600 billion in tax hikes and government spending cuts scheduled for early January. Now consumers also appear apprehensive, a sign worries about the so-called "fiscal cliff" could bite into household spending.

"People are hearing about (the cliff) and it negatively impacts confidence and investor sentiment and even holiday sales," said Todd Schoenberger, managing partner at Landcolt Capital in New York.

Also, with business sentiment weakening in recent months as the fiscal cliff has approached, many economists think hiring may remain sluggish even as the pace of layoffs ease.

The Labor Department said initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000, the Labor Department said. That was lower than analysts' forecasts for 360,000 new claims last week.

"This recent improvement in the claims data is potentially a favorable signal for the labor market," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

After spiking in the wake of a mammoth storm that ravaged the East Coast in late October, the weekly levels of new claims have now dropped to their lowest levels since the early days of the 2007-09 recession. The four-week moving average fell 11,250 last week to 356,750, the lowest since March 2008.

The claims data for last week has no direct relation to the Labor Department's monthly employment report, but suggests the surge in layoffs since the recession has at least run its course.

Companies in recent months have been adding to their payrolls at a lackluster pace, and analysts expect the monthly employment report due on January 4 will show 143,000 jobs created in December, down from 146,000 in November.

Analysts said the holiday season can make it more difficult to seasonally adjust the claims data, another reason to be cautious.

"There is usually a high margin of error in predicting the monthly payroll number," said Michelle Meyer, senior economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch at New York. "That's even more the case this month from the residual effects of the hurricane and year-end seasonal adjustments," she said.

U.S. stocks opened flat, while longer-dated U.S. Treasuries rose after the data and after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said it was unlikely a budget deal would be reached before year end.

Following a truncated holiday break in Hawaii, U.S. President Barack Obama has returned to Washington to restart negotiations to avert the fiscal cliff, which if not averted would likely put the U.S. economy back into recession.

The signs of progress in the claims data also included a caveat, at least for the latest week.

Obama declared Monday a holiday for federal workers and many state offices followed suit and were unable to provide complete data for last week's jobless claims. Data for 19 states was estimated, a Labor Department official said.

Fourteen of those states, including Texas and California, submitted their own estimates, which tend to be fairly accurate because the state officials work with a significant amount of data, the Labor Department official said.

Analysts said the holiday season was another reason to be cautious about the report's positive tenor. Also, with business sentiment weakening in recent months as the fiscal cliff has approached, many economists think businesses are holding back on hiring.

"A significant improvement in labor market conditions ahead of any resolution to the fiscal cliff is unlikely," said Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays in New York.

Separately, the Commerce Department said new U.S. single-family home sales accelerated in November to a 377,000-unit annual rate while the median sales price jumped 14.9 percent from the same month in 2011, signs that the U.S. housing recovery is gaining some steam.

In a fourth report, the Chicago Federal Reserve said its index of factory activity in the U.S. Midwest increased in November to 93.7 from a revised 92.2 in October.

Amanda Reyes, Former Toy Store Manager, Claims Ex-Boss Coerced 'Rough' Sexual Relationship, Sues

A former manager of a New York City children's toy store is suing her ex-boss over what she says was a coercive sexual relationship, according to the New York Daily News.

Amanda Reyes, 26, alleges that Steven Reis, 60, the owner of Fantastic Kids Toys, forced her to "engage in an ongoing sexual relationship? that ?included increasing acts of ?rough? sexual activities, including hitting, slapping and biting,? in exchange for employment and rent, according to the lawsuit filed Friday.

Reyes, a single mother, started working at the store for $10 an hour in 2010 and was promoted to manager in March 2012. According to the lawsuit, this is when Reyes' relationship with the married Reis began.

Gothamist called the affair a "sadomasochistic nightmare," noting that Reyes' attorneys described it as a "manipulative master-servant type of relationship" that involved "role-playing and simulations."

Even after Reyes began dating an NYPD officer in June, Reis allegedly demanded the woman meet him at her apartment for sex twice a week.

As Jezebel points out, Reyes reportedly tried to break off the relationship and was fired from her $60,000-a-year job in late August.

Reis, reached at his Manhattan store by the New York Post on Dec. 24, would not comment on the lawsuit other than to call the accusations "false."

Of course, this is not the first time an employer has come under fire.

In November, the CEO of Waffle House was sued by a former employee, a single mother who alleged that she was forced to perform sex acts for 10 years in order to keep her job, according to the Associated Press.

The CEO, Joe W. Rogers Jr., claimed the charges were "extortion," but the woman accusing him allegedly taped some of their encounters.

Retailers lead U.S. shares lower; yen hits two-year low

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The yen fell to a two-year low against the dollar on Wednesday as Japan's new prime minister called for weakening the currency to stimulate inflation, while U.S. stocks fell, led by declines in retailers' shares.

Sales growth at U.S. retailers was projected to have fallen short of expectations during the holiday shopping season, according to preliminary estimates from firms that track retail spending.

The S&P 500 was down 0.5 percent, with consumer discretionary stocks among the hardest hit. The Morgan Stanley Retail index <.mvr> dropped 1.9 percent.

U.S. shares were also pressured as it appeared Congress will not negotiate a deal before January 1 to avoid the "fiscal cliff," a series of $600 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes that would slow the U.S. economy sharply unless lawmakers take action.

There is concern that potential tax hikes cut into U.S. holiday spending.

"With the 'fiscal cliff' hanging over our heads, it was hard to convince people to shop, and now it's hard to convince investors that there's any reason to buy going into year-end," said Rick Fier, director of trading at Conifer Securities in New York.

A U.S. official said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama may return to Washington from his Hawaiian holiday as early as Wednesday evening to resume talks.

A series of big decisions will wait until early 2013, when tax rates are scheduled to rise for most Americans. Economists warn that the world's largest economy could fall into recession as a result unless action - even retroactive - is taken to cushion the blow of higher rates and reduced spending that has helped bolster a weak economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 36.95 points, or 0.28 percent, at 13,102.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 7.08 points, or 0.50 percent, at 1,419.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 19.01 points, or 0.63 percent, at 2,993.59.

U.S. stocks have held in a tight range, recovering losses sustained just after the U.S. election in November. The S&P 500 is still up about 13 percent on the year.

The dollar rose as high as 85.74 yen on trading platform EBS, the highest since September 2010, following the swearing-in of Shinzo Abe as premier and was last at 85.64. The euro rose as high as 113.40 yen, a 16-month high, up 1.4 percent. The euro was at $1.3215 against the dollar, up 0.3 percent.

Abe is calling for a mix of aggressive monetary policy easing and big fiscal spending to beat deflation and weaken the yen. He is pressuring the Bank of Japan to adopt a 2 percent inflation target that would auger for a weaker currency, threatening changes at the central bank if his wishes are not met.

"The election of Abe has had a galvanizing effect on the dollar/yen exchange rate and he has been able to accomplish more in two months of jawboning than the BoJ has... over the past several years," said Boris Schlossberg, managing director of FX strategy at BK Asset Management in New York.

Many markets remained closed following Christmas. European exchanges were largely shuttered, and Hong Kong and Australia were also closed. The MSCI All-World Index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.2 percent on Wednesday.

U.S. single-family home prices rose in October for the ninth month in a row. The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury notes rose 4/32 of a point in price to yield 1.762 percent.

Brent crude climbed above $110 per barrel on Wednesday, hitting a two-month high, with investors hoping for a last-minute deal to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis. U.S. crude futures gained $2.22, or 2.5 percent, to $90.83.

YEN WEAKENS

The weaker yen has bolstered hopes for better earnings from Japanese companies and underpinned the Nikkei, which has gained about 18 percent since mid-November, when the election was scheduled. The yen has lost nearly 8 percent against the dollar in the same period.

The Nikkei <.n225> closed at a nine-month high on Wednesday, with a 1.5 percent gain. <.t/>

Minutes of the BOJ's policy-setting meeting in November, released on Wednesday, showed that some board members said the central bank must act decisively, without ruling out any policy options, if the outlook for the economy and prices worsens further.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was little changed. Shanghai shares <.ssec> were flat, but stayed in positive territory on the year after a 2.5 percent jump on Tuesday erased 2012 losses. It is set for its first annual gain in three years.

Traffic Generation - Radio Ads And Podcasts - Internet Marketing ...

Most internet marketing experts are excellent at generating traffic. And one reason that they are excellent is that they pay ALOT for the traffic that they do get. Now I?m not talking about a $100 advertising budget.

I?m talking about a $10,000 advertising budget, and MORE.

You can generate lots of traffic to your website also if you know that right ways to do it. Getting traffic is essential to your online business, and it?s a very important part of your online business success. If you can?t get traffic, you won?t get alot of sales. And without alot of sales, your business will fail very quickly.

In today?s lesson, I want to share some insights on how you can get traffic to your website the smart way. You have paid advertising and free marketing that you can choose from. Both can be extremely profitable for you. In fact, here?s the first way to get traffic to your website:

1) Run radio ads

If you?re an expert at you do, and you have identified a niche that has a pressing problem that needs to be solved, you should do any and everything that you can to go after this market. You will want to expand your marketing reach dramatically. And even though your business is online, you can still run radio ads and lead people back to your site.

Make sure you clearly state your website address. If there are any ?dashes? in your domain name, make sure to mention also. In fact, you will even want to spell it out for them just so they get it and understand it.

This way people can understand how to spell it when they type your domain name into their internet browser. Here?s another way that you can drive traffic to your website:

2) Podcasts

Podcasts are easy to make, and are free. With radio ads, you have to pay for a segment and you only have a minute or two to state your message. With a podcast, you can make it as long as you want, and have people download it from iTunes or your blog automatically. You will want to get set up with a service called ?Feedburner? if you?re going to pursue podcasting.

And the same thing applies with radio ads. When it comes time for you to state your website address, make sure you clearly state what it is, how to spell it, and to mention it at the beginning of the podcast and at the end. Podcasting is very popular and people will visit iTunes all the time just to hear your podcast.

These 2 traffic generation tips are things that are very simple and easy to do. Running radio ads will cost money, but you can reach so many people with a simple ad, and in return, get hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your website within a short period of time. I personally think that you should use both in your marketing arsenal today.

Good luck with using these 2 strategies to get more traffic to your website.

Insurance Industry Looking Hard At Climate Change

A recent paper in Science (abstract) examines the insurance industry's reaction to climate change. The industry rakes in trillions of dollars in revenues every year, and a shifting climate would have the potential to drastically cut into the profits left over after settlements have been paid. Hurricane Sandy alone did about $80 billion worth of damage to New York and New Jersey. With incredible amounts of money at stake, the industry is taking climate projections quite seriously. From the article: "Many insurers are using climate science to better quantify and diversify their exposure, more accurately price and communicate risk, and target adaptation and loss-prevention efforts. They also analyze their extensive databases of historical weather- and climate-related losses, for both large- and small-scale events. But insurance modeling is a distinct discipline. Unlike climate models, insurers? models extrapolate historical data rather than simulate the climate system, and they require outputs at finer scales and shorter time frames than climate models."

Serpico: Pacino played me better than I did

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City police whistle-blower Frank Serpico says Al Pacino played him better than he did himself.

Pacino played the detective who exposed widespread police corruption in the 1973 movie "Serpico." The Daily News (http://nydn.us/RMNYcB ) interviewed the real-life Serpico in Ghent, in New York's Hudson Valley, for a story published Sunday.

The 76-year-old retiree spoke weeks after the death of fellow whistle-blowing ex-detective David Durk.

Serpico smiled as an interviewer noted he is ranked No. 41, just behind Lassie, on the American Film Institute's list of movie heroes. He says that's "good company."

The newspaper says Serpico keeps busy trying to finish a book and taking solitary walks.

Serpico and Durk's efforts resulted in front-page newspaper stories and a city panel that recommended reforms to prevent police corruption.

How excess holiday eating disturbs your 'food clock'

Dec. 21, 2012 ? If the sinful excess of holiday eating sends your system into butter-slathered, brandy-soaked overload, you are not alone: People who are jet-lagged, people who work graveyard shifts and plain-old late-night snackers know just how you feel.

All these activities upset the body's "food clock," a collection of interacting genes and molecules known technically as the food-entrainable oscillator, which keeps the human body on a metabolic even keel. A new study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is helping to reveal how this clock works on a molecular level.

Published this month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the UCSF team has shown that a protein called PKC? is critical in resetting the food clock if our eating habits change.

The study showed that normal laboratory mice given food only during their regular sleeping hours will adjust their food clock over time and begin to wake up from their slumber, and run around in anticipation of their new mealtime. But mice lacking the PKC? gene are not able to respond to changes in their meal time -- instead sleeping right through it.

The work has implications for understanding the molecular basis of diabetes, obesity and other metabolic syndromes because a desynchronized food clock may serve as part of the pathology underlying these disorders, said Louis Ptacek, MD, the John C. Coleman Distinguished Professor of Neurology at UCSF and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.

It may also help explain why night owls are more likely to be obese than morning larks, Ptacek said.

"Understanding the molecular mechanism of how eating at the "wrong" time of the day desynchronizes the clocks in our body can facilitate the development of better treatments for disorders associated with night-eating syndrome, shift work and jet lag," he added.

Resetting the Food Clock

Look behind the face of a mechanical clock and you will see a dizzying array of cogs, flywheels, reciprocating counterbalances and other moving parts. Biological clocks are equally complex, composed of multiple interacting genes that turn on or off in an orchestrated way to keep time during the day.

In most organisms, biological clockworks are governed by a master clock, referred to as the "circadian oscillator," which keeps track of time and coordinates our biological processes with the rhythm of a 24-hour cycle of day and night.

Life forms as diverse as humans, mice and mustard greens all possess such master clocks. And in the last decade or so, scientists have uncovered many of their inner workings, uncovering many of the genes whose cycles are tied to the clock and discovering how in mammals it is controlled by a tiny spot in the brain known as the "superchiasmatic nucleus."

Scientists also know that in addition to the master clock, our bodies have other clocks operating in parallel throughout the day. One of these is the food clock, which is not tied to one specific spot in the brain but rather multiple sites throughout the body.

The food clock is there to help our bodies make the most of our nutritional intake. It controls genes that help in everything from the absorption of nutrients in our digestive tract to their dispersal through the bloodstream, and it is designed to anticipate our eating patterns. Even before we eat a meal, our bodies begin to turn on some of these genes and turn off others, preparing for the burst of sustenance -- which is why we feel the pangs of hunger just as the lunch hour arrives.

Scientist have known that the food clock can be reset over time if an organism changes its eating patterns, eating to excess or at odd times, since the timing of the food clock is pegged to feeding during the prime foraging and hunting hours in the day. But until now, very little was known about how the food clock works on a genetic level.

What Ptacek and his colleagues discovered is the molecular basis for this phenomenon: the PKC? protein binds to another molecule called BMAL and stabilizes it, which shifts the clock in time.
