Skin cancer has become the latest concern of the professionals not only because it has started affecting a big population but experts see its cost rising shockingly in the near future. If the estimates of the medical professionals are to be believed, the cost of treatment for skin cancer is expected to rise by more than $700 million over the next five years as the Australian population ages.
Above predictions are being made by a study that was recently run by Epworth and St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne. Researchers of the study are predicting approx a 40 percent jump in costs of skin cancer treatment followed by the fact of baby boomers, who were not told of the dangers when they were young.
"What we are seeing is the result of a lifetime of sun exposure, and in particular the rises we're seeing are in the people who are aged 70 and 80 who got their sun exposure before the sunsmart and slip, slop, slap campaigns began," Epworth Hospital Director of dermatology Professor Rod Sinclair said, who is expecting the skin cancer costs to go up for at least the next two decades.
Skin cancer is common in Australia accounting for seven out of every eight cancers diagnosed but fortunately many are caught in time enabling doctors to decrease the mortality rate from the problem.
