Birthday and beads at Douglas Mardi Gras parade

Phyllis Rastall needed a little help from family and friends to get onto the float Tuesday night at the Douglas Mardi Gras parade. Once settled in the chair, though, the 87-year-old bundled herself up and grabbed a handful of beads and waved to the hundreds of people for her annual birthday tradition.

Rastall has been celebrating her birthday in the parade since 1989, said her daughter, Rita, as she tossed beads to spectators.

The Mardi Gras Queen led the parade, swaying in a beaded headdress that took her about two weeks to craft. She leads the parade each year and, each year, she makes a new costume.

Alexa Urquhart worked to keep her shiny star-shaped hat on as a cold wind blew down Center Street.

?It?s a process,? she said about making the large hat with blinking lights that matched the parade?s theme of ?Star Spangled Mardi Gras.?
