GIMME SHELTER: Summer is busy season for the Niagara Falls ...

Cathy Fugler

GIMME SHELTER/Cathy Fugler

Oh, a storm is threat?ning
My very life today
If I don?t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I?m gonna fade away

Saturday was a great day: We participated in Niagara Dogfest, which is a big annual event celebrating all things canine.

Baby bunnies have a temporary home at the Niagara Falls Humane Society. (Photo NFHS)

The Niagara Falls Humane Society was invited to host a barbecue lunch for the day, as we did last year, and we also included our signature Sour Puss Lemonade stand, and an Art for Animals tent. Thanks to everyone who supported our efforts and helped us pull off another successful fundraiser.

Every day is a busy day at our little shelter, and yesterday was no exception. In addition to her usual duties, our vet tech, Jen, was caring for a baby robin, feeding a tiny hummingbird, and attending to two baby bunnies. The variety of things she is responsible for sure makes her days interesting. There is a tremendous amount of caring in our building every single day, and it makes me proud to work here.

Summer is such a busy time at the shelter. Please be patient if you call and get put on hold, or if you have to wait in our lobby. If you have an animal to surrender, call us first to set up an appointment. And be aware that we have a waiting list for cat surrenders because the shelter is full right now.

Unbelievably, people are still leaving their dogs in cars in our community. I implore you to leave your pets at home where they are safe and cool on these hot summer days. It?s incredible to me that every single day we get calls about dogs suffering in locked cars in the summer heat. Your dog?s health and wellbeing is completely your responsibility. Keep them safe. Leave them at home. And if you see a dog in a hot car, please call us, or the police immediately, don?t take matters into your own hands.

Please visit our website, www.nfhs.ca? to view all the animal profiles, and to check out what?s happening at the shelter. Our Facebook page is another great way for you to stay in the loop.

***

Please visit our website, www.nfhs.ca and like us on Facebook. We have so many wonderful animals looking for their forever families right now, check them out on our Facebook albums HERE.

If you think you might have a talent or skill that would help the shelter, please call or email me. Are you good at fixing things? Gardening? Desktop publishing? Are you crafty? We could use your help. Call me so I can fill you in. The number at the shelter is 905-356-4404, or visit our website at www.nfhs.ca.

While early previews generally say that the phone looks great and feels terrific to use, many are questioning why Motorola is selling a phone with mid-range specs for a high-end $200 on-contract price. Computerworld has talked with several analysts who are similarly skeptical, although one analyst points out that Motorola has a big advantage that other struggling smartphone vendors such as Nokia, BlackBerry and HTC don?t have: An enormous marketing budget courtesy of parent company Google. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation can now ?remotely activate the microphones in phones running Google?s?Android software to record conversations? and that it can also ?do the same to microphones in laptops without the user knowing.? The FBI is now able to perform these feats because it?s invested heavily in recruiting hackers to help it improve its surveillance capabilities, the Journal?writes. Per The New York Times, Sony?s latest earnings report showed that the company sold 9.6 million smartphones over the last quarter, a significant improvement over the 7.4 million it sold over the same quarter in 2012. Even more impressively, the company?s mobile division turned a $60 million profit after posting a loss of $28.1 million in the same quarter last year. Business Insider points us to the latest numbers from Canaccord Genuity showing that Apple and Samsung now account for 103% of all smartphone industry profits. What this means is that every other major smartphone vendor ? from HTC to Nokia to BlackBerry to Motorola ? is either breaking even or losing money selling smartphones. This isn?t a new development, of course, but it?s an indication that Apple and Samsung?s rivals have been unable to gain any traction this year despite releasing a slew of new high-end devices such as the HTC One, the BlackBerry Z10 and the Nokia Lumia 1020. Consider this: Last October, iOS app revenue was 4x bigger than Google Play app revenue. But in?Q2 2013, the iOS market generated only 2.3x more revenue than Google Play. The revenue gap is closing at an astonishing speed. Why? Because even though Google Play is obviously an inferior market for mobile apps in many ways, it is swamping the iOS market in sheer volume. Cruz seeks grassroots move against health care law

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A grassroots effort against President Barack Obama's health care overhaul could persuade skittish Republicans to deny money for the law and overcome arguments that any resulting shutdown of the government would be the GOP's fault, Sen. Ted Cruz said Friday.

"We have to stand up and win the argument," the Texas Republican said to spirited applause on the opening day of the annual RedState Gathering, a meeting of conservatives highly critical of many established Republican leaders as well as Democrats.

Cruz, a tea party-backed first-term lawmaker, has long suggested that one way of taking money from the law would be to hold up a continuing funding resolution to keep government agencies running after Sept. 30. Several of his Republican colleagues have called such a move counterproductive and detrimental to the party and the nation.

Cruz said the effort should start in the House with passage of a resolution that would fund government with the exception of the health care law.

"We don't have the votes right now. In fact, to be honest, we're not close," Cruz said. But, he noted, he won a come-from-behind victory in Texas' Republican Senate primary last year with strong grassroots support, beginning with conservative bloggers.

On Friday, the GOP-controlled House passed for the 40th time a measure targeting the law that Republicans deride as "Obamacare." The bill preventing the Internal Revenue Service from implementing any part of the health care law passed on a near party-line vote of 232-185. But the legislation is certain to be ignored in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Liberal groups announced Friday a campaign in Louisiana and nine other states to counter criticism of the health care law. They're also encouraging those who need insurance to enroll in the state exchanges established under the law when the enrollment period opens Oct. 1.

PARIS (Reuters) - Sanofi said one of its regional offices in China has been visited by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce in Shenyang as part of a probe into a bribery scandal that has involved other Western drugmakers.

"We are not really aware of the purpose of the visit, we are working with them," Chief Executive Chris Viehbacher told reporters during a conference call on Thursday.

He added that the French group's head office in Shanghai had not been contacted by Chinese authorities.

Cochrane adds to Canada's medal haul at World swimming championships

Saanich?s Ryan Cochrane added to his world medal total with bronze in the 800-metre freestyle event at the FINA World Championships on Wednesday.

Cochrane swam the race in seven minutes and 43.7 seconds, chasing down American Connor Jaeger in the final 100 metres to ensure his third straight world championship medal in the 800m.

China?s Sun Yang won gold in 7:41.36.

Cochrane, 24, grew up in the waters of Saanich Commonwealth Place, and previoulsy won silver at the 2011 Worlds in Shanghai, bronze in 2009 in Rome, bronze in the 1,500m of the 2008 Olympics and silver in the 1,500m 2012 Olympics.

Cochrane was agonizingly close to another medal when he was fourth to touch the wall in the 400m freestyle on Sunday, yet was just 0.1 of a second away from silver.

?The touches aren?t my friend this meet,? Cochrane said in Swimming Canada?s release.

?It was hard getting fourth place. It?s a frustrating place to be but at the world championships anything can happen.?

Cochrane still has the 1,500m to look forward to for Saturday.

?(It was a) very interesting race ? five guys in it all the way and it?s not that normal in the distance freestyle,? said Randy Bennett, head coach of the national team and Cochrane?s coach at the Victoria Academy of Swimming.

?It?s usually a two- or three-horse race but he could have been fifth ... to be aware that he had to go as hard as he did in the last 100 metres, we?ll take the medal and run with it but you always want a little bit more.?

The medal is Canada?s fifth overall at the championships, and second in swimming. University of Victoria?s Eric Hedlin won a silver medal in the five-km open water race earlier in the two-week event, which also features water polo, diving, synchronized swimming and a newly added high diving event.

?The field is getting faster and faster and I think one of the mistakes we made (in the 800m) is playing into everybody else?s race tactics,? Cochrane said.

Cochrane will seek a third straight year of podium finishes in the 1,500m freestyle event when heats begin Saturday. He has back-to-back world championships silver medals in that event.
